Hey there. I am new to this forum. I strongly suspect from my own life experience and psychological study that I am on the spectrum. I am hesitant to get a diagnosis for obvious reasons. I am hoping that I can meet some kindred spirits here and potentially meet up with people in my area. I live in the US BTW. Even an online connection would be worth it to me. I'm as lonely as lonely gets. I play disc golf as a hobby. I like horror movies. I am a Christian; specifically a theistic evolutionist. Any suggestions for discussion threads I could join? If not, I'd love to chat.

Welcome to WP! I hope you wander around the planet and find a few areas that interest you.

I agree with not rushing into a formal diagnosis, just yet. You are young enough that it could work against you. In a decade or two, when you are more "secure" in life, however, you might find a formal diagnosis interesting. It could confirm your suspicions or, worse yet, indicate you are not Autistic...then you'd need to do more research.

And while you are sort of young to get a formal diagnosis (potential problems with employers, etc.) you might find an informal diagnosis interesting. AQ would be quick and fast, and it is not "official" so it is not obligatory to report it. (Though an unofficial diagnosis of "Autistic" could help you steer your personal research on best ways to cope with your neurodiversity.)

Sup! I'm new here too. What are the obvious reasons to avoid diagnosis? I haven't had any issues because of it that I'm aware of yet, but now I'm kind of worried.

Issues due to a formal diagnosis?

It can disqualify you from some things, like being in the military. Being in the military was one of the best things I ever did; I am still benefiting from it. If I had been disqualified from the military I would not have gotten those benefits and my life would likely have been less successful.

Of course, not having a formal diagnosis can disqualify you from treatment. Fortunately I was able to muddle through life without formal treatment...I just got some funny looks and occasionally needed a favor.

Individual circumstances can vary so some people are clearly better off with a formal diagnosis and some (me, for instance) were better without a formal diagnosis.
