My wife started getting notifications on her desktop from some site called Truthfinder. I tried disabling such notices on both Chrome and Edge, but they didn't go away. Eventually I looked at everything in the Task Manager and saw something suspicious called Shift which had a lot of subprocesses. I did some research and discovered it's a browser. I did some research and got mixed results as to its legitimacy, but the notifications finally went away when I uninstalled it.

I don't see any reason to use it at all.

TBH, I don't see much reason to use anything other than Chrome, Firefox or Safari. Pretty much every other browser is derived from one of those anyways. Although, I do use Librewolf, but that's just Fx with all the privacy settings set prior to installation, not quite a different browser.

I would personally like to see more people on Fx or Safari as Google seems to have no issues with abusing their position to push changes that are dangerous to the net.

Vivaldi is nice, too.

Yes, although from what I can tell, it's Chrome based, so ultimately beholden to whatever Chrome does that can't be easily patched around.

Here's what Vivaldi has to say about it from https://vivaldi.com/blog/vivaldi-browser-vs-google-chrome/

Quote:
Browser code can be roughly divided into three parts.

The first part – the browser engine – takes care of rendering webpages. That’s the code we share with Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers.

The second part is responsible for the user interface – that’s the part you see and interact with the most. That’s where Vivaldi is unique.

The third part controls external services such as synchronization between devices. In Vivaldi, that part is fully secure and independent of Chrome.

So Vivaldi's browser engine is from Chrome, but not the rest.

Yes, although the browser engine is a really big deal as that's what's permitting Google to push it's own agenda onto the web and where they can bury code that makes it hard to block ads is located.

Same here, especially with tabs on the side and container tabs. It's just about the best experience I've had. To an extent people should use what they like, but I wish fewer people would use Chrome based browsers just because I'd like a more open future for the net.
