Did not expect to find myself here!

I am a copyeditor, and I was working on a psych textbook that mentioned the RAADS test. I have been dealing with depression for decades, but autism had never crossed my mind. So I took the test just on a lark, not expecting to score very high. I scored 189.

I was shocked to say the least! How is this possible?

I've since made several friends take it, and all have scored more or less where I thought: my "normal" friends are all in the 20 to 40 range. My brother scored 120 and his daughter 100. Both scores seem about right! My brother and I are very similar.

Everything about my life makes so much more sense now, and the slow process of unburdening myself of decades of guilt and shame can begin. What a relief!

I feel like I have finally been given an owner's manual for my brain! But I really wish I had gotten it at age 10!

I wonder if my depression will begin to lift too, as I am guessing that is largely caused by the constant frustrations and heartbreak and stress and loneliness.

And I wear an ASD badge with honor. It is hard to wear a depression badge like that.

That's the story, hope you liked it!

Greg

Welcome to Wrong Planet Greg.Yes its a relief, when you finally get some understanding of your Neuro Diversity .
It was not a Dx I welcomed, with open arms. After all. Had worried for many years about my Non- verbal sister.
And never associated the abuse I got growing up, with the same degree my little sister got from our own Family.
I was not non verbal , after all . So could I have autism..? Maybe all my life had must been a run of bad luck, with bad people " AFTER ALL" consecutive, misunderstanding . What you say? there IS a spectrum? Oh Gawd,, So now I get a little bit of a cause and effect understanding. But it made me what I am, with all the health issues that can come with more serious neuro diverse conditions ,especially as you age. But , one aspie is just one Aspie,And not everyone gets the same situations.Or same issues . But I did get some unusual benefits from it aswell. Better insights .Congradulations on your journey of self discovery.

ReeseCup, Welcome to Wrong Planet.

You wrote, "I feel like I have finally been given an owner's manual for my brain!" In a way you are actually at the beginning of a journey. The human brain is much more complex then you will ever know. So, if you continue your exploration you will discover many, many intricate layers.

Welcome to WP! I hope you like it here.

And, I am optimistic you will find some peace in the Autism Spectrum. I got my diagnosis days before my 65th birthday and was delighted to finally find out what had been making me different my whole life. Finding out sooner might've been nice but I would not've wanted to find out when I was young enough that the diagnosis would've interfered with my life. My time in the military was valuable and it would've been a great loss if I had been barred.

Welcome to the planet.
Many fun and informative interaction and reading are wished upon you :-
Take care as others have already stated, you have not received an "owners manual" merely a flyer. :)
All of our minds are unique and much to our mutual frustration there is no one fits all, but keep in mind that it's never about the destination and always about the voyage and whom you meet along the way and you'll be fine. :)

kind regards,
Kada
