Hi yall,
I have been trying to find someone to marry for years now. I have at least 10,000 dollars in life-saving medical bills every month that are covered by medicare/medicaid....I am also on SSDI/SSI. As it stands now I am legally forbidden by the Federal Government to marry if I want to keep my coverage. However my mom told me that disabled people can get married to each other and keep their benefits. Although I am not for sure about that. Do you think getting married and falling in love with a fellow Disabled person can work...because its either that or I go bankrupt or die or never get married. I just wish us disabled people could get married without jeopardizing our health insurance.

That's a tough one.

Maybe a domestic lawyer can help you.

Your Social Security Disability is not affected by your partner's income, it's mostly only affected by your own earned income from something like employment. You can also keep your Medicare if you get married but your Medicaid might be affected depending on your partner's income & resources in relation to your medical expenses. However SSI is dependent on the couple's combined income & resources & the ammount of SSI a couple gets is only 50% more than an individual does & the resource limit for the couple is three thousand instead of both being allowed two thousand.
You could also live toghether like your married without offically being married. That's what me & Cass do since being married would screw up her benefits.

Well Texas has common law marriage so that may not work...also my church would disfellowship me if I joined them and did that. I have thought about just considering us married without going through with the legal stuff. I have been told that I would lose my health insurance if I get married. I would lose my medicaid.

This is my main issue with getting married too!! !

Besides my brother being against it, marriage would mean revoking my Social Security benefits!

I would have to get a real job

Vermont has common law marriage as well but it's not like we tell Social Security we act like we're married. Cass told em I'm her boyfriend & the guy asked if we identify in the community as being married & she said No. It's not like we tell others we're married but some others probaboy assume that cuz off how we act but I do not think most married couples act nearly as affectionate as us. Your church & our government do not accomedate for the practicalities & complexities of disabled having serious relationships so I feel no guilt about not being fully honest & open.

Okay....I think me and the future wife would only be allowed to have 3,000 dollars in assets if we got married.

I think that Iis unfair.

I could have gone on SSDI and collected a nice bank deposit every month as I had a good paying job and the required forty quarters but worked really hard on rehab and made a full recovery! I maxed out on my retirement account for decades so I now have a lot of money.
