BTW, quite disappointing for a "software engineer" to not know about something that basic as backing up their data.

I doubt that much, if any, of the data in the cloud is actually backed up. Don't they basically just make multiple copies of it in the cloud? That's not a backup.

Theoretically they may have some form of hardware, locational redundancy going on behind the curtain, but it's worth nothing anyway if they can just randomly remove your account.
Generally methinks someone else's servers should be treated just like a single drive; it may fail and lose all data. It's not a magical alternative to proper backups
