David Lammy MP is proposing to abolish trial by jury in all but the most serious cases such as: Rape, murder and manslaughter

This is in a move to clear the backlog that was created during the pandemic

i agree with the criticism

Quote:
Senior lawyers criticise justice secretary’s radical plan for England and Wales, saying it could ‘destroy justice as we know it

What do you think

Also agrees with the criticism . If Rump sees England get away with it ? He will try to figure out how to do it here .
Already , no fair trial here unless you are very wealthy . 8O

Some of the worst things I've ever seen happen to vulnerable people happened in courts in front of juries, lawyers trying to elicit an emotional response. So my response is, cynically - it is diseased, it will remain diseased.

I would prefer trials to be conducted more dispassionately. I am not sure the jury system serves the interests of vulnerable litigants in this sense. Maybe it could - maybe it is supposed to - but legal culture being what it is I think often it does not.

I would like justice to be more visible but that for me is about better reporting, ordinary people feeling like they have a stake.
