What´s your opinion on Love On The Specttrum?
Hey, everyone! What's up?
I'm Korby, a woman in her early twenties who was recently diagnosed as autistic. Since then, I've pretty much binge-watched Love on the Spectrum from Season 1 onward.
I'm really curious to hear other people's thoughts on the show, especially from those of us in the autistic community or people who have autistic family members.
What do you think of the show and the way it portrays the dating experience? Do you feel there's any infantilization from the parents or the production team?
Here's my take:
Overall, I really enjoy the show. That said, I sometimes feel that a few of the cast members' families have some problematic views and can be a bit overbearing toward their adult children.
Another thing that stands out to me is how special interests and personality traits are sometimes presented in a very simplified, almost childlike way. For example, the introductions often sound like:
"So-and-so likes buses... but hates the sound of people chewing."
While those details are certainly part of who someone is, I think they can unintentionally reduce people to a list of quirky traits instead of showing the depth of their personalities.
One thing I genuinely appreciate is the dating coach. I think her advice on social cues, communication, consent, and boundaries is valuable for anyone entering the dating world, regardless of age or whether they're autistic.
I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences!
Hope you all have a great day! ![]()
Ehh very mixed feelings, mostly negative. It's great that long lasting couples have been formed via that show but it's at the expense of the cast's dignity as adults. The editing is like that of a nature documentary about baby woodland critters. And I don't like how normie audiences respond to it, they cry literal tears at the moderate functioning/level 2s, calling them cute, and then bad mouth the high functioning for being "annoying" and they fail to see the irony in this.
The parents of some of the cast members are reincarnations of PT Barnum.
I've seen parts of it but not the entire series, I'm too put off by the editing. I like some of the cast members themselves, Kaelynn Partlow seems cool.
