Thats what that phrase actually means to me.

My dad would always say, "This is my house, you do as I say." That angered me because it was mum's house too.

Parents who are also learning to be parents often issue commands to small children because small children are unable to understand reasons. Often they fail to understand that their job is to help their children learn to take control of their own lives.

There is a parallel to teaching an Asperger kid to drive. Often kids, particularly ones that tend to focus intensely, need to learn to periodically look to the side and in the rear view mirror so that they can be aware of what is around them.

As children grow they need to learn what things to look out for and that what things to consider in making decisions. Often there is resentment if what they want is dangerous or risky.
