Facebook integration? Really?
Since this came up here, I've been paying to attention to what types of "like" buttons are available on the other discussion boards I frequent. I've seen several up at the top to like the site, and well separated from the thread navigation links, but none on the threads themselves.
So ... a "like" button up by our big title would be pretty consistent, and maybe some for articles, but I'm not understanding the draw to "like" specific threads.

this is what i thought. it is less freaky to me to have people 'like' the whole site or a specific article. more freaky to have people trolling the entire site out of curiosity because of a FB link to a particular thread.

Based on my short time as a moderator so far I can see that keeping one's real world identity and WP identity apart is important. Banning someone could result in real world events if the person was vindictive enough or unstable - and typically those people who do get banned aren't usually the "nice guys" either.
I saw something spill over like this in another forum and a female member was stalked and hounded by another member until she took out a restraining order on him.
and that's a hundred bucks I won't see again, either!

bumping this incase the discussion isn't over.
i notice the fb like feature is still active, and in the haven even.
the more i think about it, the more it bothers me. am i alone in not wanting to post anymore because of it? i am driven away quite easily, in life, on internet forums, wherever, so i can't claim to speak for everyone. but i really do not feel comfortable about the idea of any of these posts being so easily broadcast on facebook, the most frequented social networking site in existence.

yeah, i had some (what i believed to be) good advice for someone having issues in the bedroom, and i did not post. it's not the end of the world as my opinions and advice are not perfect constructions encased in gold that i must always bestow on others! but i appreciate when people have advice for me, and i do not like to pass people over who may need actual assistance.
in some ways, this experience has given me pause and taught me some caution about being too graphic or open about experiences, but at the same time i was the kind of person who stepped in and helped the nurse to answer questions during "sex ed" in elementary school because i do amass some knowledge in that area (yes i really was that annoying, even then). so i want to help here but i feel subdued now.

Here is my take on all this.
If something is discussed between more than two people then it isn’t a secret and the same applies on a forum. If you didn’t know this rule before, then you do now. Let me also remind you that every single one on this forum is one person out of six billion plus people in this world.
Now, I have some insecurities myself about what I want people to see online about me. Its these insecurities that have led me to un-list a lot of my old Youtube videos, just to convince my parents and other people that its something I’m not obsessed with and something I did in the past.
It’s these same insecurities that have led me to delete old blogs and even privatise them. I’m sure that if my parents found my dole blog (click HERE to see) before my Aspergers Diagnoses it wouldn’t of been the best of confrontations.
Fortunately I’ve had a fair few embarrassing moments where my website usage was exposed to people I didn’t want to see it. One example was when I opened up the wrong MSN contact and started talking about Habbo Hotel to some girl from school years ago. In my neighbourhood Habbo Hotel was a sad thing to go on and I can remember been laughed at once in school for going on it. However this lass didn’t react at all after I explained that I was talking to the wrong person.
Another time my dad didn’t like what I wrote on Facebook and had a right go at me. But I’m still here today alive and kicking. One thing is certain in life and that’s confrontations.
Wrong Planet Membership isn’t something to be ashamed of nor is what you say on here. Like I said in the first few sentences, its only a secret if no more than two know.
I understand where people are coming from with Facebook and wrong planet coming together in the terms of Facebook ‘like‘ because I‘ve experienced that embarrassing situation your fearing myself. But what some people don’t understand on here is what Alex Plank wants out of all this. Now I’m not afraid to say that I’ve criticised Alex Plank on other forums and its up to him to go find that early judgement of mine. However I now have a new judgement.
Personally I feel that Alex has the best of intentions with wrong planet, but he has long lost the desire to care much about these forums. This forum to him is probably just ‘CV fodder’ so that he can say that he owns a popular forum to potential employers/interests. His main focus it seems with wrong planet at the moment is to turn it into an online magazine about Aspergers/Autism. You only have to look at the front page and its full of ‘top’ columnist who were no doubt drawn to this website because of the popularity of the forums. Now I might be totally wrong, but this is my best guess. Either way Alex isn’t going to openly admit that these forums are no longer a top personal priority for him.
Finally if you don’t like the way this community is going then I recommend that you go. There was a wrong planet before individuals joined this forum and they’ll be a wrong planet afterwards. But lets be honest - most of you would rather take this risk of getting caught out than to leave completely.
PS - Alex is also a film maker and he’s going to want to use the wrong planet forums to advertise whatever he makes in the future. This forum will get him quantity response. We’d all do it if we was in his position wouldn’t we?
well, i am learning some shame from the experience and being more cautious. sort of.

If Alex wants to use this web site to promote his future career then there's nothing wrong with that but he still has a responsibility to the Wrongplanet community and members. If WP members express privacy concerns about the Facebook "like button" at the bottom of each thread, he should still listen.
The problem isn’t exactly Alex here. Its people who are over reacting over something minor and forgetting the unwritten rule of two people when it comes to privacy and secrecy.

Unwritten rule? This is supposed to be a support site and people need to feel safe to post personal stuff on here while keeping their WP identity separate from other identities.

The fact that someone else can choose to hit "like" and share a post with their friends that way doesn't affect your privacy. Keep your WP identity separate from your other identities, and don't use the "like" thing yourself, and there's no privacy concerns.
Also, the ability to post on Facebook a link to a thread here, and say one likes it is NOT new. This just makes it easier. It was possible before, and the only way WP could prevent it is by making the messageboard so you have to log in to read it, which they aren't going to do, for very good reasons.
