Was their any similar controversy over Yvonne Elliman playing Mary Magdalen?

Conservatives who say we should shut up about identity politics won't shut up about identity politics.

At least she didn't have to pretend to be a virgin.

Actually, France is still a Catholic country. That said, they are much less pushy about it than most.

National Catholic Register wrote:

...Today’s announcement of the resignations of two French bishops suffering from episcopal burnout, and the impending release of a potentially devastating report about sexual abuse allegations at France’s Community of St. John, have directed renewed attention towards the fragile state of the Church in France. Is Catholicism now on the verge of extinction in France, “Eldest Daughter of the Church” and homeland of St. Louis and St. Joan of Arc?

Studies of the evolution of the country’s religious landscape have already suggested so over the past months. The most recent of these shows that Catholicism is the religion with the steepest decline and the lowest rate of intra-family transmission.

These findings have led historian and sociology of religion expert Guillaume Cuchet to suggest that, in a few decades’ time, Catholicism could be in the minority, overtaken by Islam, evangelical Protestantism and, above all, by people with no religion at all. At the same time, this trend is likely to be accompanied by a more traditional and observant approach among minority Catholics.

If these predictions prove true, the face of France, whose 1,500-year history began with the baptism of King Clovis by St. Remigius, will be profoundly altered, as will that of Catholic practice itself....

Barbara Hershey made an excellent Mary Magdalene

A lot of people seem to have Mary Magdalene pegged as having been the adulteress whom Jesus saved from stoning, although she isn't named in the canonical gospels. Some claim that she was a prostitute.

Either way, Barbara Hershey was outstanding.

Time for a couple of jokes?

1) Jesus was walking and came across a stoning getting ready to take place.

He stood in front of the crowd and said, "Let he who is without sin cast the firs stone".

A voice from the crowd replied, "You always want to go first, don't you?"

A stone cam flying past and hit the one to be stoned.

Jesus turned to the thrower and said in an exasperated voice, "Mother! Please don't do that any more."

Has anyone seen Mary Magdalene, 2018? https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5360996/

The role of Jesus' mom was played by Irit Sheleg, another Israeli actress.

Irit Sheleg has a daughter, so she probably wasn't a virgin.

https://jfc.org.il/en/official/irit-sheleg/

Mary Magdalene was played by Rooney Mara, who was born in New York. Her father has Irish, German, and French-Canadian ancestry, and her mother is of Irish and Italian descent: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rooney_Mara

No Jewish or Palestinian ancestry there.

She is married to Joaquin Phoenix, who played Jesus in the movie.

Well, well.

Kissy, kissy. Maybe Jesus wasn't so gay after all.

There is another Jesus movie coming out soon: "The Last Supper"

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt32461003/

It doesn't look like Jesus' mom is among the characters.

I wonder what the controversy will be this time?

I'd like to see a story like Look Who's Back, only instead of Hitler coming back it's Jesus.

Yet another movie controversy.

https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/202 ... wtab-en-us

Quote:

Will Snow White be a 'victim of its moment'? How the Disney remake became 2025's most divisive film

The live-action version of the classic fairy-tale animation sounded like a surefire hit. But even before it's reached cinemas, the response to it has been loud and often hostile.

You wouldn't think that the war in Gaza would have much impact on a Disney remake. But the live-action Snow White, a revamped version of the 1937 animated classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, has become a flashpoint for social and political divisions, even before its global release next week.

There was some backlash to the casting of Rachel Zegler, of Colombian descent, as the heroine. More recently, there has been blowback both about Zegler's pro-Palestinian comments and about pro-Israel comments by Israeli actress Gal Gadot, who plays Snow White's stepmother, the Evil Queen. And there is an ongoing debate about whether there should have been dwarfs at all, live or CGI. The film's director, Marc Webb, said in Disney's official production notes, "I think all good stories evolve over time. They become reflections of the world that we live in". He has likely got more than he bargained for, as reactions to Snow White inadvertently reflect the most polarised aspects of the world today. Like political rhetoric in countries around the world, responses to the film's production have been loud, irate and sometimes ugly....

I guess the newsmedia has to write articles about something, and push controversy to keep readers engaged.

Just like pro wrestling.
