No they aren't. Materialism implies a strict rejection of the supernatural.

There are what are called "atheistic" sects of Hinduism. Hinduism comes in monotheistic, polytheistic, and even atheistic, flavors. Buddhism is sometimes classified as an atheistic form of Hinduism. An atheist who doesn't believe in stuff would be an idealist atheist. Haven't met any of those yet but I'm sure it would be fascinating.

A "person who doesn't believe in stuff" is usually thought of as being the opposite of an idealist. They are usually thought of as being a "cynic".

To reiterate:

Atheism is only used if what the person disbelieves in is ...the existence of god (or of gods).

Not with disbelief in other things.

Kitty has multiple issues, which is nothing unique on WP. I don’t have exactly the highest opinion of some things she’s done, but it’s really not my place to judge. I tend to take her at face value and try to be helpful if I can.

I think she was trying to figure out how broadly or narrowly to use the term. For example would it be the right term to ask if I don't have faith in Republicans or Democrats, does that mean I am an atheist?

That is not exactly what it means.

The "the" is "Atheism" is from the Greek "theo" meaning "god".

The "A" at the beginning means "not".

The word means "not believing in the existence of god/gods".

Not believing in a god or gods would indeed make you a nonbeliever in most religions though. Though you could be a Buddhist and be an atheist at the same time.

Yeah. And the answer would be 'no'. Being neutral or distrustful of both parties (for example) doesn't make you an "atheist".

The word "agnostic" ( someone who doesn't know whether god exists or not) is sometimes used tongue in cheek.

Folks DO use the word "agnostic" occasionally in a joking way that doesn't apply to theology. LIke "I am an agnostic about the existence of Bigfoot" or "I am an agnostic about whether they should impeach Trump". But even that's being purposely wrong in word usage for humor.
