It's 2.25am here at the moment. I've been trying to sleep for the past hour and a half with no luck. The 84% humidity isn't helping, but usually it takes me several hours to get to sleep, if I get to sleep at all. On the recent advice of a psychologist I was talking to, I'm trying not trying to sleep; giving up, doing something else and coming back to it in my own time. It's hardly an ideal solution, since it'll leave me out of sych with everyone else in this timezone, but there's not much I can do about it.

Generally, when I go to bed, my brain seems to decide that it really, really needs to run it's versions of scandisk, defrag, memtest, graphics benchmarking etc. My brain feels more active at night when I'm trying to sleep than it does during the day when I'm trying to work.

Actually, that self-same psychologist mentioned that nocturnalism is very common with autistic-spectrum individuals. I've always felt more relaxed, imaginative, alert and productive at night. It's just compatabilty issues that keep drawing me into daytime hours.

As long as the sleep isn't part of Mania, I really have no suggestions because I try to deal with that problem myself though not to the extent of not getting sleep. It just takes me a long time to fall asleep.

If its part of Mania, meds would help particularly those specific to treat Bipolar; otherwise, I am clueless.

I usually sleep well, but wake up really early (which sucks).

I'm having problems with it right now and have been in general lately. It's 2:40 here and the best thing I can do is try to make up some of the studying I'm not getting done during the day. I figure I should just give up on a normal sleep schedule and study whenever I can since I seem to feel tired during the day and a little more alert and focused at night lately.

I've spent the whole of today working while utter shattered from my paltry 3 hours of sleep last night. Now that it's getting dark outside, I'm starting to feel far more alert; just in time for bed . I have a hiking trip tomorrow, starting in the morning, so it'll be a real bugger if I don't sleep again tonight.

Just by my name "nocturnalowl" I too, tend to stay up late, usually around 4am and arise about 12 to 1pm. I hate it since it doesn't allow me time to have a pleasant day since it will end soon and at this time of year it is hot and humid.

It's bad at night since I have to keep it quiet and stay in my room most of the night which is like imprisonment. I'll even pace around the backkyard quietly if I must to get some cool air and maybe a bright moonlight glare.

Regarding insomnia, I don't think many of us have it, we just have an abnormal sleeping schedule, but if we try to improve the sleeping times, then insomnia may creep up on us.

Bad sleeping schedules may ruin daily activities and not having a normal daily routine can also keep us awake too late since there is nothing for us to do that would make us tired at a certain time of night. Instead we end up trying to do as many things as possible to keep the mind going and going and that alone can really be tough.

Performing activities that stimulate and make the brain active really can cause us to drop us off the sleeping wagon. I had that problem as I was sleeping early but ended up going online, locating places on maps, learning a rare topic, figuring out stats and math tricks, etc. It gets tough to slow the brain down until it is a little too late.

Let's see! Hmmmm?

Here's what I know about myself!

I am a night owl. That is the best
time for me to read, write, go online
and anything that requires a extreme
focus.

My Grandmother said that as a child
it was almost impossible to get me
to sleep at night.

Insomnia, No! Late night inspired, Yes!

Hmmmm?

night time seems to be the only time I can get anything done. I usually don't sleep til 4 or 5 am (I'm trying to correct this) and, consequently, I cannot wake for many of my classes

Since I can't hear when my implant is off of me, I can fall asleep well most nights. I can't stand anylight whatsover in my room when sleeping. I guess my experience is like a sensory deprivation tank, and my major problem is getting my mind to s**t down as it can really be racing sometimes. I find it relativly easy to focus on nothing, which may/may not lead me to sleep. . .

I usually get 9 hours of sleep, from 9 to 6.

I have this problem a lot too, but when nothing else works, something that seems to work every time for me is sleeping on a hard surface such as the floor. I'm not sure why but it really seems to help me out.

I sleep on the floor almost every single night. I started doing it last year when I had some back problems and thought maybe the mattress was too soft. I soon found out that not only was my back much better, but I was falling asleep much quicker. I think the main reason is because the floor makes tossing and turning painful, so I find a comfortable position and just stay there. (I actually sleep on top of 3 or 4 blankets.)

I sleep on the floor on occasion too, and started because of back problems also. I got a new, stiffer, mattress though, so I usually sleep in my bed. I find the floor's good for if I have to sleep for only a few hours, since I don't get too comfortable and can get up easily.

On an aside, I got an eye cover thingy yesterday to block out light. It seems quite good, especially as a fair bit of light gets into my room from the streetlights outside.
