I used to run a phpBB2 forum (which is what the WP system is), and from what I recall (it's been a while), yes, you can delete an account and still leave the posts intact, and they do become "guest."
Most forums, if they are going to delete an account will do it leaving the posts intact, because deleting the posts screws up the cohesiveness of people's replies (not everyone quotes the person they are replying to).
Here on WP, from what I'm reading here, it appears the policy is not to delete accounts, but if you don't want to participate anymore, you can request your account to be banned. I've did this myself temporarily, right after posting an explanation in the Members forum just so users would understand it was my own choice.
If what you really want is to have every contribution you've ever made here to be wiped out, it's highly unlikely they would agree to that because of how it screws up the logic of conversations held here.
Voluntary banning seems to me to be the most logical alternative. You could post a blog entry under your account explaining that your banning was voluntary. Anyone who cares to look into it can open your profile and read it. We're all basically operating under pseudonyms anyway, so it's not like everyone will know who you really are anyway. While it is likely a lot of people won't bother to look at your profile and see that your banning was by choice, why worry about them anyway? People like that are just judging with no insight. Who cares what they think?

I'm not likely to be around much longer. As before when I first signed up here years ago, I'm finding that after a long hiatus, and after only a few days back on here, I'm spending way too much time here again already. So I'm requesting my account be locked, banned or whatever. It's just time. Until then, well, I dunno...

I had no idea they did ban requests. I thought they don't do that here because of what happened three years ago and this one member started to troll and spam just so he can get banned and MrMark said they don't ban members by request, they can just leave and stop logging on.
I guess times have changed here.
I go to one forum where it shows who is banned and I always look at their profile since the mods always list the reason why that user is banned. 99% of the time it's for lying about age or multiple accounts.
But here, it doesn't really say who is banned. Not all banned members have a X under their username saying they are. I didn't even know you were banned by request. I do recall you making a thread about it but I didn't think it happened.

To be fair, it may be possible the only reason they did it is because it was an unusual request. I don't think they would want to honor such requests on a regular basis if too many people began asking for it. I don't think it's very likely that many would ask for it anyway, but you never know. It's one thing to ask to be banned as an aid to control over usage of the forum. I don't think I'm the only person here that at one time found myself staying up way too late because of losing track of time. Trolling intentionally to get banned is quite a different story.
