I really must say that I admire your will to keep fighting- a stroke at four must have been devastating for you! Looks like you're certainly doing a great job at getting by- you should be an inspiration to us all!

I am also new here, and I think it´s nice to hear from you. Great that you are doing so well!

And, as for speech-problems- lately I have been sometimes talking with messanger to 11-year old girl, who is supposedly NT (?) but cannot speak due to physical problems. She can hear though, or at least that´s what I´ve understood.
It made me wonder if people that cannot speak due to physical problems (even if they can hear) have better chance understanding AS-people and vice versa. If I had the chance and energy, i think it would be interesting subject for scientific research. After all, whether As or not, if you cannot communicate with words speech, you are "outsider" more or less anyway. Therefor anyway the quiet observer as well.

That girl at least is one of the most clever (actually wise would be better word to describe her) persons I have "talked" to, and shares similar experiences as many aspies....

Leela, I love your perserverance. You are a true inspiration. I love sign language. My roomate in college was an interpreter for the deaf. I actually went to school to become a dhh teacher, but changed my sophomore year. Now, I am a special ed teacher for moderate and severe disabilities and use sign for many of my non-verbal students. I hope this stie provides what you are looking for.

This post struck me b/c my aunt had similar situation happen to her. She didn't speak for over 5 years in her teens and got put in a wheelchair. But I think hers was b/c she had a lot of bad seizures growing up. Back then they didn't know everything about autism they do now so they had strange treatments and gave her electroshock therapy which only made it worse. Anyway, point is, don't give up and don't believe everything doctors tell you about anything, especially if they ever try to make you feel limited in anyway. My aunt finally learned to talk again some and she ended up getting a master's in social work and helps others. But she had to do it on her own. The doctors didn't really know what they were doing back then and probably still don't today to some degree. That's my aspie inspiration--to just believe in our own intuitions, b/c we're a helluva lot smarter than shrinks or NTs ever have given us credit for. Anyway, good luck!

It's ironic, because I'm really outspoken and love speaking, and yet I've come across you.
