I hope that is not assuming that the planet earth is able to support traditional carbon-based life forms for an infinite amount of time, which it is not. In several billion year the sun will expand, drying up the oceans and baking the earth's surface, and eventually swallows our planet. We will have had to settle other habitable planets by that time in order to survive, and even then, food sources for carbon-based lifeforms are limited whereas a computer only needs electricity.

I personally want immortality. By the time I die, I hope to have my brain scanned into a computer system. I would be able to interact with a virtual world indefinitely and with the physical world through a humanoid robot under my control. .
