Besides, even if it is animated and you don't like it,, that's your problem.
Oh great, thanks for that.
Some members also find the flickering and visual noise of animated avatars extremely distracting, and IIRC there are WP guidelines about avoiding - or at least, being mindful of - animated avatars for just that reason.

^^ Already been using it for years - but of course it blocks noisy ads, not noisy avatars.

What I disliked intensely on other forums was the visual riot of animated avatars - and sometimes even signatures - I was forced to wade through to reach any content, and I can tell you it's a real delight to not have to go through the same thing here.

then adblock plus. Must I do all the thinking for you?

Install adblock plus, right click the element or graphic you want to hide and select "Adblock Plus: block image" and then select the "custom" radio button. In the "custom" field, you'll see the image's address or location on the internet.

There are enough people who don't use adblock plus, and those people are likely to be turned off by a site with animated avatars and pictures in sigs. Like Cornflake, I was very happy that this site did not allow animated avatars or pictures in signatures, and I mostly joined it for that reason (compared to some other autism forums which did allow them and were thus visually busy).

There is simply no need for animated avatars. If you don't like how your 'tar looks at large dimensions, then make it smaller. Having a huge avatar is not a requirement.

sycophants, the lot of you.

It's because the admin is too lazy to push a couple of buttons and enter a couple of numbers and doesn't care.

Oooh, snotty! :lmao:

Also, you're not thinking through the consequences of your suggested actions with Adblock Plus (which I'm already using, BTW) but since it seems I'm incapable of thought I'll leave that one for you to work out, what with you being superior an' all.

More likely because what's available is perfectly adequate for the intended purpose, and the fact that this doesn't happen to accommodate much by way of overly-large images or noisy, flashy animations is a Good Thing.
It's an avatar, not an exercise in graphics production techniques.

What the anthropomorphic dog from the television series said.

just adblock (plus)ed Brian without any consequences whatsoever.

you block that specific graphic stored on the server. You don't delete or block all avatars.

see?

and I'm not snotty. Just superior. :P

You have yet to explain why the many people who are pained by large/animated avatars must continually spend time blocking those images.

What point is there in a "clever" avatar, when many people will see it just once? Just post the image, if you are so proud of it.

You do take time to ensure that your posts are intelligible, well formatted, correctly punctuated, and so on. This is all "A GOOD THING".

Without thinking through the consequences, cavilling at the small(ish) avatar image size is "A BAD THING".

While I have been guilty of assisting (using gifsicle) members to present animated avatars (see below), I have only done so whilst telling them that it isn't a good idea, as they will usually become fairly anonymous, as many members will just block the image, forget their username, and/or ignore all their future posts.

Well at least you admit it.

Now to do some introspection and identify the source of this complex.

I just think that if other forums I go to can have an avatar limit of 150x150px and 90-some kilobytes in size, then surely WP can too.

that's ridiculous. I win by logical fallacy.
