There's nothing wrong with "School Spirit" when it's positive and reasonable.

It's scary when it becomes compulsory, rabid competitiveness, though.

I agree with you about when it becomes compulsory, almost like forced loyalty to a cause. Join the party or else in other words. I think forcing it is a way to crush dissent amongst students.

I participate in some of my school clubs, most notably Latin Club/Certamen and the Teen Advisory Board plus hopefully the National Honor Society, but ultimately I could care less about my school. I am pretty much devoid of school spirit. It doesn't help that my school requires us to recite the Pledge of Allegiance every damn morning, which my old high school (which I was much more attached to) did not require us to do and which I feel is a waste of time.

i hate that we have to recite the declaration of independence each morning! If i have spanish that morning then we have to recite it twice: once in english and again in spanish. I've gotten so tired of reciting the doi that i've started changing the lines a bit. i.e. one nation under bob or i pledge adeviance to the flag. I'm working on the school prayer right now :D.

I don't really care about school spirit unless acting in such a manner is amusing to myself. I did get involved with clubs but those were mostly because colleges like students that "get involved".

School spirit should be renamed "jock" spirit. School is where society's preoccupation with heroizing athletes begins. Then it culminates with paying them millions and millions of dollars/euros/pounds to simply PLAY GAMES.

my school had a pep rally on thursday and it was...you could not hear whoever was talking because everyone was screaming. The poor special guest was barely audible above the loud talking. Then, finally when everyone realized that someone was talking the gym became even louder with all the "Shutup!"s. It was pretty annoying.

I know there are a few schools out there with more diverse "school spirit" though. They have pride in their academics, athletes, appearance, robotics, you name it! I just wish more places could be like that. There's still a long way to go before we get rid of that ancient sport only identification (insert school name here), HOME OF THE (Insert school sports team crap.

Hopefully our schools will get there, but it's a long time coming I think.

I've heard stories of some schools giving students the opportunity to earn letter jackets for academic accomplishments the way athletes earn letter jackets for being in sports. When schools introduce this, the athletes object because it changes the whole meaning of the letter jacket and makes them less special for just being jocks. It does give equal recognition to the academically skilled students in my opinion, which is what school is supposed to be about anyway. Athletes get alot of recognition and are glorified in schools and in the community while academically skilled students get very little or no recognition at all. Time for that to change.

I show my school spirit all of the time. I am very active in my school community. I try to find my school shirt, so I can wear it every day. I joined the band, because they have pride in the school. I get good grades for the school. I pass the exams at the end of the year. I do that for the school also. If you have these things, you definitely have school spirit. If you are not on poor school standing, that's another one also. ;)

High School – yes, a very dark time (maybe because the lights went out quite often during the day). I was the band kid who wrote poetry and hung out with the goth kids and who also played football – so, the jocks/preps didn’t know whether or not they wanted to slap me on the butt in the shower (the way they do to each other) or beat me up.

I do debate club, and I did stage work (costume and make up) last year, but I don't really consider that "school spirit". I consider that interests, especially because the people who participate in both those clubs are a severe minority in our school, and I like them.
At our school, school spirit is defined by either a.) participating in a school sport (especially football and cheerleading) and/or b.) going to the games to cheer on the formely mentioned spiritists. (Is that even a word? I like the sound of it.)
I do not go to football/basketball/whatever else sports, and I do not play, and therefore no, I do not have school spirit. Which is fine with me. (On blue and white day [our school colors] I wore all black and gray. Everyone kept saying, "Where's you school spirit? Don't you like it here?" Nope.) I really don't like my school, and I'd much rather move and go to a new school (where I could quite possibly be skipped a grade, and thus end my high school education sooner).
As for spirit week, I don't do it, but I think some of the other kids' outfits are interesting. We had a ninja day this year, and some of the people had really good costumes that they made at home.
We also had emo day ( ) which I found offensive, but whatever. That's our school.

I don't know about you, but I love school, and have since I was little. High school is proving to be the best four years of my life. There have been some people I haven't liked much, but they don't count for anything: The number of people (and kinds of people) I get along well with greatly outweighs those I don't.

In elementary and middle school I used to participating in knowledge contest, because I had good grades. In high school, my grades decreased, but I used to participating in some internal english contest. Me and my best friend won the first places almost all times :).

Now I study Electronic Enginery in the technology of my city. When I was in Plastic Arts group, I used to participating in all art expositions of the group. I chose my best drawings and paintings, and I and other members showed all drawings in the library. Our art teacher invited a lot of "important" people and we invited our friends, they and other students went to the school library in order to watch our exposition.

Sometimes I go with my best friend to the sschool soccer games, I'm not a big fan of soccer, but she loves it, and I try to go with her whenever I can.

we had spirit week where there was a different dress-up theme each day. i love any excuse to wear a costume, so i went all out for those. It was for my own amusement though, not some ridiculous ficticious concept like school spirit.

Well i was forced to attend a homework club which i didn't want to go to because i could do my homework without help. I was also forced to attend a lunchtime club because other people were causing problems with me in the yard.
