ok, it's time for me to ask a dumb question now duh  - how does one definitively block flash in IE8?
Try this:
http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/disab ... sites-ie8/
It's a bit clumsy but looks like it should work well enough.
(don't worry about the "Registry Settings" part at the end: it's tech information only)

Of course, you know the best solution: get a real browser.

thank you for that. but curiously i found that on my puter, flash is already disallowed as its default setting [IOW there is no listing of allowed sights]. what other browsers work similar to IE8 and let me use IE8 bookmarks, but will run decently on a slow machine?

That link for chrome didn't provide a solution, but I found an alternative fix. Here it is in case anyone else has the problem: Type about:plugins into the chrome address bar. Flash should be listed, click disable. Easier than I thought! :P.

Firefox - then install the add-ons Flashblock, AdblockPlus and NoScript. (these are easily found via the Add-ons menu entry)
Each of these allow you to decide exactly what gets displayed/run by any site with one or two mouse clicks.
You'll also be able to import your IE bookmarks.

It's a bit broad, though - Flash won't work for any site once you've done this, whether it's required for ads or not.
