Based on this:
'smoking a mystery substance called diesel-based potpourri.'
and this:
"It almost appears to be something we are getting a lot of out of the smoke shops and stuff. What type of chemicals are in them I don't know"

Its clearly synthetic cannabis, I don't think its really effective to treat autism or anything else really as its nothing like the real thing based on what I've read about it. As the article says its commonly sold legally at head shops. If this guy is really as mentally screwed up as the article says he probably was on the internet and read something about cannabis being a possible treatment for autism symptoms......but was ignorant of the fact there is a major difference between that stuff and actual cannabis and obviously its very difficult and rare to actually get a medical marijuana prescription for a child but it does happen so maybe he figured it was easier to get what they sold at the smoke shops. But now I'm going off topic trying to analize every sort of line of reasoning that might have led to this whole thing.

Because he did something evil. Autistics are saints, you know...

That's not even evil...its quite easy for me to see how a schizophrenic autistic person might do something like this based on being exposed to inaccurate information and possible delusional thinking. The article says aggravated child abuse....so if its only referring to that incident I disagree on the grounds of the mental disorders interfering with his reasoning and behavior but if there is more to it than this then I would need more details to know what i think about it.

This isn't really all that bad in comparison to alot of articles posted here.

He was diagnosed first as schizoeffective then it changed to aspergers.

Yeah we can't do no wrong.

@TheyGoMew Autistic people can have delusions you know. Does getting that mental illness cure them from it because the criteria says they can't have it?

Do you have a problem with me or something League Girl? You haven't had one nice thing to say to me. It's just snark.

I don't hold back opinions usually. Nor do I keep one opinion just because that was my initial reaction. It usually leads to investigating more and if he has aspergers, I suspect the drugs are making him loopy.

I only have a problem with people playing the doctor. Telling you autistic people can have delusions isn't being snarky and neither is asking you if that mental illness cures them from it. Just another word I seen thrown around online (mostly at Babycenter) just like I see with bully and troll. I suspect snark may be another misused word.

Actually, based on the DSM criteria, one cannot have Asperger's and Schizophrenia at the same time. Link: http://www.autreat.com/dsm4-aspergers.html

That's why I felt like he isn't autistic - the way the article describes him, I see the delusions clearly there. Now, given the new information, I don't know whether one can have schizoaffective + Asperger's. I know someone who was given the two diagnoses at two separate times, and in his case, the two diagnoses cancelled each other out.

He also reminds me of John Best Junior. The Encyclopedia Dramatica article on him even says that John Best might have "severe undiagnosed Asperger's".

What the article describes does not seem like rational thinking on his part...so there had to have been something going on.

But what happens if an autistic gets schizophrenia later in life, does that mean they are cured from their autism? Does autism make us immune to getting that mental illness? Do people really think if someone gets schizophrenia, they are now cured from their autism? I am starting to assume so.

This is why people with mental disabilities and/or disorders should NEVER do drugs. He MAY be autistic but his brain is damaged to much from drugs that it's nearly impossible to tell.

The article says nothing about his drug use......all it says is autism and scizophrenia, so maybe you can't blame drugs. But that could be a factor depending on if he did drugs, what kind and how often. After all not all drugs cause brain damage, the way your thinking.

Also doctors prescribe drugs to people with mental disabilities and disorders all the time so why not?

Well considering what I've read on the effects of synthetic cannabanoids sold at head shops, I do not think him smoking that would have led to him becoming convinced its a cure for autism and then trying to have his kids smoke it to be cured. I'm thinking scizophrenia or something like that is more likely though I would say that stuff is kinda dangerous in general moreso then actual cannabis due so it probably did not help things but that alone does not explain it.

Potpurri, or Spice, or K2 (it goes by many names) is a synthetic THC analogue. It sucks. What's more it is far less safe than the real thing.

This guy meant no harm. He's just a crackpot.

Not buying that he's Schizophrenic, or that he made them smoke it. What can I say, I have very little faith in how the media reports stories. Been drinking with my own parents from a young age, and if my mum can buy me weed, she probably will too - at least she says so. But I guess some people would write it as coercion or something really bad, just because I'm considered disabled for all my medical labels.
