How about we replace cure with a more positive word?

Keeping-Aspies-from-trying-to-kill-themselves-daily.

Or even better, address the issues that might make aspies feel like trying to kill themselves daily and try to solve those....but I don't think a 'cure' is solving it since its typically not the AS itself that makes one feel like killing themself.

See that's exactly what I think of when I think of a cure.

Hmm I think most people understand a cure for autism as getting rid of autism...which is probably why it seems negative to a lot of people since there is really no real way to turn an autistic person into a neurotypical person. I mean adressing the issues that make things difficult for people with autism is not quite the same as getting rid of the disorder it would be more helping them function to the best of their ability with the disorder..........then of course environmental/social factors have to be adressed and possibly accommodations made

What if the disorder itself is what is making things difficult? What if the best of one's ability isn't sufficient enough to function at? That's the case for me. Aside from having basic subsistence needs met, things still can be very dissatisfying and unhappy.

Well with autism its pretty much a physiological/neurological difference.......in order to cure it you would basically have to rewire a persons entire neurology and genetic make up or whatever. This is not to say autism cannot make things difficult but I don't see how it could be cured either.

Also if the best of ones ability isn't sufficient enough to function at all....then accommodations should exist for that person ideally, I realise we don't necessarily live in an ideal world though. I am actually not very functional at all, and its actually been getting worse but I have other issues than just autism. Anyways though if people with such difficulties had access to a supportive, healthy environment though they would still struggle maybe it wouldn't have to be constant misery or constant feelings of alienation due to not being able to keep up with the standard or whatever.

I doubt it would have to be completely "rewired". I wonder if they would have to repair the faulty connections of the existing wiring and even increase the connectivity of the wiring. Gene therapy is also getting sophisticated.

And how would they go about doing that? also gene therapy just sounds freaking creepy, I certainly don't want my genetics messed with. Also though maybe the solution is not adapting everyone to a small box or making everyone neurotypical.

I don't know. Gene therapy would swap faulty versions of genes for functional versions of genes. I don't think they would be doing all this research if those knowledgeable of it didn't think there was a large chance of success. I think some are trying to convince others it's impossible to make them pessimistic so that they will accept scary propaganda like "small boxes" and "becoming neurotypical"

Faulty versions of genes? wow that is creepy sounding to me......I mean the idea of having genes removed and replaced with other genes is pretty disturbing to me. Also how is small boxes and becoming neurotypical propaganda considering from what I have read the idea of a cure tends to center around getting rid of ones autism it would make sense to me that the goal is to make then neurotypical or more normal. That is just the message given off by many seeking 'a cure' for austism, that is how it makes me feel I am not basing it on any propaganda.

That's reality for many, when certain versions of genes don't perform their function well.

A lot of the reason gene variants exist, is due to random genetic changes before conception.

Cause I've seen so many of the anti-cure crowd saying it many times even though it doesn't characterize cure. They want to convince others to not support the cause. Normal isn't a goal. Treatment has removal of disability as a goal. Handing ability to someone which someone else already has. I don't get how it could be getting rid of one's autism if some autistics already have the same abilities that would be gained by other autistics in a curative treatment.

Okay, these are all of the legitimate suggestions I have received so far:

Plodder - Neurological genocide/murder

Fnord - Re-programming

Maybird - Re-wiring

AardvarkGoodSwimmer - Small boxes/ing/er

CockneyRebel - Forced normalisation

Acranyn - Assimilation

I'm impressed. Personally, my favourite ideas are those of Plodder and Acranyn.

I would like to see some more though, so, keep posting ideas.

PLEASE READ: Unless you have an idea for a word that you'd like to share, please refrain from posting here because, as I specified in the OP, this thread aims to find a word to be used exclusively by those who are anti-cure. Therefore, if you are pro-cure or would like to continue using the word "cure" in relation to ridding the world of Autism, this thread should be irrelevant to you. I thank you in anticipation of your compliance!

I was going to say reprogramming. I see it's already been suggested, so I second that. I like assimilation, too.

Yes I am aware but that is before conception...I certainly would not want someone replacing my faulty genes with genes that aren't mine, I can only imagine the sort of complications that might come with. Also how would they figure out what specific genes are faulty? it just sounds like more risk than it is worth....Even so if such treatments are created I would not want to bar people who want it tried from having it done........but god forbid they did it to someone without their consent.

Opinions are not the same as propaganda, people feel like sometimes those with a cure in mind might not nessisarily have the best intrests of the individual with the disorder in mind. Also its not a 'cure' if its not getting rid of autism, as far as I know any method to remove ones autism could have a lot of undesired side effects since you'd have to alter some pretty major things. Treatment and helping someone with autism function to the best of their ability is what I think represents the best approach....but that is just my opinion if someone wants a cure great it just should not be forced on anyone.
