Anime has craft elsewhere though, which is in the a narrative, which is why I still like it. They usually have a powerful composition of characters.

I've watched tidbits of clips of the pony show, and the brand of humor is exactly the same. In one clip there was a pony character approaching another pink pony character whom was eating cupcakes, but when the character approached said pink-pony character, she turned around and made a silly face to scare the approaching character annnnnd.... a sound was played.

But Get it? It's funny because the pink pony really likes cup-cakes, so she made a scary-face towards the other character , so clever! (sarcasm).

I don't mean to sound like a spoil-sport but there are alot more cartoons and comedy out there that has much more craft put into it, it makes me sad that it's this that people choose to obsess over. But in the same sense that pop music is popular because it's simple, I guess this show is popular because it is simple.

EDIT: oh and I noticed you're 16 (above user), I still found anime to be funny when I was your age but alot of your comedic senses don't develop until later, I'm not aiming my lament towards you, but adults around my age that still like that sort of humor, it's time to move on. But younger people are just at a stage that they have to go through.

*facepalm*

Okay, my question was rhetorical because it's actually impossible to tell for yourself if you are missing something because if you don't know it's there, you don't know it's there. As an analogy, let's say a completely colorblind person looks at a rainbow, and assumes it's just a bunch of lines, and thus he assumes that people who are amused by the rainbow are amused by lines. He cannot comprehend colors, and doesn't know what he is missing. That's what my jab was about, you think the humor is only extremely crude because you don't understand the more sophisticated humor.

With the Japanese, you need to understand that different cultures have differently developed humor, so foreigners aren't going to get everything. Therefor foreigners are only going to get the "lower" forms of humor like slapstick because it's more universal. Many shows targeted specifically at international audiences drastically play up on physical humor because of this, like "Oggy and the Cochroaches". Anime and FiM are NOT like that. With anime you are being a cultural imperialist, assuming American humor is inherently more sophisticated than Japanese humor. With FiM I believe you are just stubbornly ignorant.

Do you really think you can judge a show just based on a few tidbits? Not even an entire episode! Well of course you aren't going to find as much of more sophisticated humor there, it takes more time to build up more sophisticated humor like dramatic irony. It sounds like you are basing the entire show off of reaction videos.

Oh, I guess the Office is just about people screaming at each other, and all the humor in it comes from people being entertained by people making weird sounds and funny faces.

Yes, FiM has plenty of slapstick (which, by the way, is something somewhat rare for a show centered around female characters), but it has other humor as well, and cutting out slapstick entirely does not make a show better. No, FiM doesn't have the most sophisticated humor in the world, but their is nothing wrong with that. Like anime it has more to it than just humor, it has a story elements as well, and other stuff. It's not in the extended narrative format of anime, it's episodic, but it does a pretty damn well job at telling stories in an episodic format, and it has loose continuity as well.

Is it the most sophisticated show ever? Of course not, but it doesn't have to be. It's simple enough to get into, but complex enough to be engage a range of audiences. You are both presumptuous and pretentious. You accuse FiM of being something it's not without placing yourself in any position to judge it, and you claim that unless something follows your standards than it lacks quality and merit. I don't care if you like the show or not, you are free to think it's as uncreative or banal as you want, but stop doing this, talking like you know everything when it's clear you don't, and acting like your opinions are facts. You also aren't even just insulting the show, you are directly insulting the people who watch, which just makes you a dick.

I've seen alot of anime in my day (starting with DBZ in my adoloscence, then moving on to stuff like trigun, outlaw star and berserk in my teen years) and almost all of these shows pull off the same predictable and recycled routine of awkward scenario - weird faces, so I'm not speaking out of my ass when I say japanese humor is bland. I've lost stimulation in watching anime in my early 20's because of how predictable and recycled it became, but I eventually learned to appreciate the other parts of it such as the stories composition and narrative. I'd like to see what you'd consider good japanese humor because it's definitely not in anime.

And could you please give me some examples of the more sophisticated humor in this pony show? Just from my example I could tell that the writers just aren't smart when they stoop to the example I provided considering how easy it is to create that brand of comedy, you can see it in amateaur web comics as well. Compare it to a show with actually talented and intelligent writers like futurama, in the episode "The Prisoner of Benda" the writers actually wrote the humor around a mathemathically equation, which took alot of wit. (that episode was nominated to awards)

and I don't think I'm insulting people by saying they're grossly limiting themselves by trying to stimulate themselves with something that's so simple. But listen, you're still a kid, I enjoyed that sort of humor too when I was your age. I'm not blaming you for liking cartoons, Hell I like cartoons (just not obessed) but like I said, this show doesn't warrent the sort of obessesion it has if a ret*d aspie like me can figure it out so easily, especially from guys my age group. Shows like futurama and south park are infinitely more stimulating, but for whatever don't develop such an obsessiveness fanbase.

I used to like anime, so I can see what you mean about the humor there.

As far as MLP goes, the humor is more derived from characters and puns. In order to appreciate Discord for instance, you have to be familiar with how the characters were before they changed. Are they one dimensional archetypes? In some ways, yes, but taken to the logical extreme. I think it is how they balance out the younger and older audience.

Oh, wow, thanks for missing the point completely, you shot for the moon, did a u-turn around Uranus, and fell flat on your back, ignoring the meat of what I brought up. I can't tell you what good Japanese humor is because 1. I'm not Japanese 2. You're not Japanese and 3. I don't even watch anime. The point is YOU cannot critique anime's humor because you are not from the Japanese culture, you are enforcing your ideals of what humor should be on another culture. You can find Japanese humor bland all you want, that is fine, but saying it's objectively bad just shows how shortsighted you are.

You are still criticizing something without even watching it, showing you are just as presumptuous and full of yourself as yourself as ever. Okay, you want an example of something more sophisticated than random noises?

This is called a pun, it's a joke is played on a single word that suggests multiple meanings. Here spike is both the name of the dragon, and it also refers to the practice of adding drugs to beverages to either poison or enhance it. (hey, it's more sophisticated than random noises :P ) . Speaking of mathematical equations, check out this:
[img][800:1136]http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-28KuGxB_9v4/T1xjnOf2l0I/AAAAAAAAiLQ/ggWe_MVuwx8/s1600/1+%25282%2529.jpg[/img]
The joke is that the episode is centered around time travel, and that's the equation for time dilation. Anyway, the show CAN'T have an episode based around references to group theory, something that only people who have studied higher mathematics know about, because it's still targeted at least in part to little girls. A show can have depth without being based around mathematical theorems (it's not an equation, it's a theorem, you can't even get your own facts right.) Calling the writers unintelligent because they aren't doing something they aren't supposed to do just makes you a douchebag. FiM has been nominated for and even won awards too, so your point on an unusually sophisticated episode of Futurama is moot.

Which brings mean to the next point. Why the hell are you comparing FiM to Futurama and South Park, that's COMPLETELY MISSING THE POINT. If you really have such a superficial view on this to condemn FiM for not being South Park than you really have no hope, the reason it's successful is because it's NOT South Park. The show has more to it than humor, the reason it's exceptional is because it's a show for girls that doesn't suck. South Park is a bunch of cynical and demeaning "crap", which some people enjoy, but other people hate (though many people are a fan of both South Park and FiM). FiM manages to be idealistic and bright without being patronizing or shallow, it serves as something to inspire, which it certainly has. Everything else is just icing on the cake. Also, this is a tv show, not a book, there is more to it than writing. It doesn't just have humor to add to it, but also has animation, voice acting, and music. The music is one of the best parts of the show, and the composers have been nominated for Emmys for their work on it as well as countless other awards.

Here is a sample of some the BGMs:

And then there are the musical numbers:

This one is inspired by the works of Sondheim, a legendary composer in musical theatre.

This is just a parody of all those cheesy Glam Metal ballads from the 80's.

This actually contains a really sophisticated musical pun in it. In this episode there is a character named Cadance, the pink unicorn, who was Twilight's (the purple unicorn) fillysitter as a child and is now being married to her brother. Twilight found Cadance to be acting rude and was just berated for accusing Cadance of being evil in front of everyone. Now, if you listen closely you might notice the ending sounds a bit off. That's because it ends in a deceptive cadence. In the next part of the episode it's revealed that Cadance was actually a succubus like imposter. Get it? (the writing for this episode sucked IMO, but the music and animation was pretty damn good.)

This song uses a a structure pretty much only found in jazz to transition between parts. It also has a musical reference back to Art of the Dress during the Applejack (orange pony) segment. (The writing in this episode also sucked, probably because executive meddling forced two ideas that each needed two episodes to properly explore into one episode, but the music was brilliant.)

You are criticizing a show for not being something it's not supposed to be, which is bad, you are saying it fails to meet any standards without even watching it, which is worse, and you are also insulting the intellect of everyone whose tastes don't match up with yours, which is the worst. Yes, you were pretty blatantly insulting people who like the show, saying their humor lacks sophistication and other bullcrap. I know you are a "ret*d aspie", but do you really think you can just go around spewing offensive stuff like this, which if the poll is saying anything directly targets half the people in the thread, and get away with it? I'll admit I have been insulting you because you are pissing me off.

His name is spike, so they shoe-horned a "he got spiked" pun? lol. Those sort of jokes are right on the nose, experienced comedians would completely avoid them as they are too simple and easy.

My point is still there, and you're even assisting me to proving it - their ability to use that theorom and interweave it in the plot shows the great levels of wit and creativity. Whilst a show aimed at little girls ( i can't believe I'm arguing this) wouldn't be able to do that. I also believe the writer of that futurama episode was a math major.

I compare them because a full grown adult is going to gain more substance out of those two shows more than they would by watching ponies run around in their fictional lives, making easy puns in squeky voices and weird faces.

... and so it won animated kids awards I figure?

Those videos remind me of disney series that I would of thought were awesome at 10.

when I was your age I loved the Land Before Time Cartoon that cartoon network was airing, for much the same reasons that it reminded me of the old 90's cartoons, but I liked those cartoons as a kid because I was young, now they offer nothing to me. The nostalgia is nice, I wish I could relive it but it's impossible as the brain needs more stimulation.

That Land Before Time series also had some nice songs (which was funny as the movies didn't). I liked it but I wasn't obessesed with it, and I was probalby a part of a niche oddballs that found it fun out of nostalgia, but no way would that show deserve the obsession this pony show is getting - especially from the adults, the stimulation isn't there.

It speaks more on the failure of these individuals to realize their full potential.

You're going to grow out of it and get there too. But for the adults that are still wallowing there, well, I don't know...

I've yet to see any true critique of what Ganondox is saying. The show has a surprising amount of depth that critics never get to figure out.

Wow, you are even more of a close-minded a**hole than I thought. At this point that's what it really boils down to, you are simply an a**hole.

You asked for something more sophisticated than random noises, I gave you that. This is by no means the best or most sophisticated joke in the series, it's just a random one that came to my head that needs minimal explanation BECAUSE it's simple. Comedians wouldn't avoid them, they would use these as well as other things. Actually, most expert comedians mainly convey their humor with noises and facial expressions that you said were crude. You continually try to make a strawman out of the show and it's fans, accusing those who like it of only liking because they have no taste in humor and the show is nothing except low humor, anyone who has actually seen the show knows you argument is full of holes, so just stop it. You don't have to like the show, but you don't have to be an a**hole either.

You're not proving anything. First, he isn't a math major, he is a math Ph.D. The writers are not math Ph.D's and it's ridiculous to expect this from them. The vast majority of the worlds best writers are not math Ph.Ds. Second, this is not just a random episode from Futurarama, it's the 10th episode in the 6th season, and it's one of the most critically acclaimed episodes, if not the most critically acclaimed episode. That's called Cherry Picking, another logical fallacy like the strawman. FiM only has 3 seasons, it's not fair to compare an young series with an aged one like Futurama like this.

Again you are completely missing the goddamn point, you should never play golf or try archery. FiM portrays a completely different world view than South Park, you cannot compare them. You aren't even trying to make a real argument anymore. You are just being a stuck-up, patronizing, self-centered a**hole making sarcastic strawman arguments. Also, if you actually listened to the goddamn music you would realize a lot of it isn't electronic, two of those BGMs were Rock, so you just set yourself up, proving you are a presumptuous a**hole.

Also, it's a BGM, there is more to it, but the youtube video was stripped down to just the music and the video. Not only would voices be cut, but so would the greater context from the rest of the episode and the show. By thinking you can judge a show based on this and thinking this shows that there is nothing but weird faces it shows a lack of sophistication on your part for being unable to see how the elements relate with each other to be more than just weirds faces and weird noises.

Those videos remind me of disney series that I would of thought were awesome at 10.

Wow, I see everything just went over your goddamn head. So much for appreciating sophistication, you goddamn hypocrite.

when I was your age I loved the Land Before Time Cartoon that cartoon network was airing, for much the same reasons that it reminded me of the old 90's cartoons, but I liked those cartoons as a kid because I was young, now they offer nothing to me. The nostalgia is nice, I wish I could relive it but it's impossible as the brain needs more stimulation.

That Land Before Time series also had some nice songs (which was funny as the movies didn't). That's because the Land Before Time tv series never was as good as FiM (though the original movie was pretty deep), you are just too stuck up to realize that. And now you continue with the strawman and the insults. Get the f**k out of here. We don't need your patronizing bullcrap. I'm pretty sure this was in A Land Before Time: "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" Apparently you didn't learn anything, I think you need to go back to watching children's television, it looks like adults today need it. Dammit, the facts that you're digging about that episode just keeps proving my point! stop doing that! Next you're going to say that the writers of futurama have figured out the secrets of life, and found a way to make a story out of it.

But the point is truly intelligent writers are going to stimulate people in creative ways that are simply fascinating, which is why I didn't really search for info on that episode to get my facts right since the point I was making is there regardless.

And even if I did cheery pick that episode, the series as a whole is no doubt more intelligent the the stuff I've seen of this pony show thus far, even the simpsons songs are much more stimulating to and adult than the ones you showed me, or even better family guy (seth mcfarlane is classicaly trained in the piano).

Apples and Oranges argument doesn't matter when an adult is trying to enjoy a little kids cartoon on the same level of a cartoon intended for an adult (or teenager). Apples and Oranges would work if the demo was completely different, I'm comparing them because one actually challenges the brain, whilst the other challenges the brain of little kids.

The fact that you are so passionate over trying to see more to this show than what there is proves my original point, this cartoon no where near warrants this sort of religious obsession as if it was some sort of great citizen kane of cartoons lol.

I'm laughing histerically because you're so passionate about your defence of a little girls show. I could probably see more intelligence out of dora the explorer if I tried really hard too, but at the end it's just a little kids show, intended for little kids, and so an adult cannot possibly gain much stimulation from that because the demograph is totally different. Easy puns and sing alongs are not going to be your cup of tea in a few years because you will have been through it a hundred times.

I just find it hard to believe that someone whom posts a maiden song in another thread, then comes here and posts a pony sing along is the same person. Those song along take about 30 seconds to create since the melody is so damn simple, but it's simple because well...it's intended for little kids...

Honestly I wish I could gain stimulation from that, but I have no doubt by the time you reach my age you're going to have moved long past it, and probably think it was sorta/kinda dumb, it'll be nostalgic for sure, but thats about it.

But that's just a part of growing up, which is why I'm critical of the grown ups that are still into that stuff.

I don't know what to say if you find pony's singing and dancing to music while they're dressed up like humans to be of stimulating. If you find that funny/stimulating I just hope you're around his age, for the guys around my age, I'm not sure why they're limiting themselves to something so easy and simple.

Anyways, calm down folks, there is much more to life than a show aimed a little kids, in fact, that's my point. Let's obsess over more intelligent stuff shall we? Because the world is well full of it, it's just a matter of putting one foot forward and looking for it.

Apples and Oranges would work if the demo was completely different, I'm comparing them because one actually challenges the brain, whilst the other challenges the brain of little kids.

You have no proof that ponies isn't "stimulating" except that it's a children's show, that's it. You've already said you haven't even watched the damn show, so you've proven time and time again that you a presumptuous a**hole. Here, I'll bring this quote up from one of the greatest American writers for you:

“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

C.S. Lewis

Might as well quote a famous mathematician (since you obviously think those make superior writers) and children's book writer (which he worked mathematical theorems in) as well:

"We are but older children, dear,
Who fret to find our bedtime near.”
Lewis Carroll

All you've proven is how immature you are in your own way. Just because you are too immature to find anything of value from it doesn't mean other people are incapable of doing such.

Here is a sample of some the BGMs:

Oh my god, that was unbearable, you're telling me you're being actively stimulated by a music video of ponies running around to electronic music and making weird faces towards the camera? lol

You aren't even trying to make a real argument anymore. You are just being a stuck-up, patronizing, self-centered as*hole making sarcastic strawman arguments. Also, if you actually listened to the goddamn music you would realize a lot of it isn't electronic, two of those BGMs were Rock, so you just set yourself up, proving you are a presumptuous as*hole.

And then there are the musical numbers:

This one is inspired by the works of Sondheim, a legendary composer in musical theatre.
You know I could record a turd and then play beethoven to it, doesn't mean I made art, sorry!

It's not Beethoven, it's not Sondheim either, it's an original score. You are so incredibly thick. Just shut up, you aren't saying anything meaningful and your irrelevant banter is not appreciated. You are just being an as*hole, attacking something you are incapable of appreciating.

Quote:

Those videos remind me of disney series that I would of thought were awesome at 10.

Wow, I see everything just went over your goddamn head. So much for appreciating sophistication, you goddamn hypocrite.

I'll admit I have been insulting you because you are pissing me off.

when I was your age I loved the Land Before Time Cartoon that cartoon network was airing, for much the same reasons that it reminded me of the old 90's cartoons, but I liked those cartoons as a kid because I was young, now they offer nothing to me.

Well I'm going to say mean things to you because you have just been a judgement as*hole.

I have four younger siblings, I've watched enough kid shows in my day to tell FiM is nothing like Dora the Explorer, they have nothing in common. How the hell does this "religious obsession" proof your point? If anything it just prooves the show has more to it than you can possibly comprehend, it proves you wrong. You know, maybe people watch the show because there actually is something to it? Ever considered that? Or are you just that close minded?

Also, the songs obviously aren't anywhere near as simple as you claim they are, I bet you didn't even listen to them. The melodies are a lot more complex in some of those songs than in most adult pop songs. You apparently completely ignored the more complex musical puns, probably because they went right over your hypocritical head. Daniel Ingram is a critically acclaimed composer (winning awards for categories that stretch beyond just children's shows), and you've done nothing but insult him because he wrote for a children's show. You are a jerk. You know, maybe there is a reason a guy can like both Iron Maiden and this?

This song comes to mind.

*facepalm*

NOTHING you said has been intelligent in the slightest, so why should we listen you? You've proven you have a very superficial look at the show, seeing nothing except ponies singing and dancing, which does not look good on your part. The show is full of "intellectually stimulating" stuff as well, you are just incapable of finding it. YOU are the one limiting yourself. No one ever said they wouldn't watch anything except ponies, you just said you wouldn't watch ponies. Think for a second.

I would say that quote works in my favor, I still watch cartoons but I understand the context in which I'm watching them, I don't have an obsession with them, where as many guys that are into this show display great lengths of fanaticism over a mere cartoon. Also c.s lewis as a writer gains more stimulation from childrens writings as it gives him insight into hsi proffesion, the same could be said for cartoonist whom watches that pony show, its a much different perspective (thus there is stimuli to be had).

If C.S Lewis saw the same level of fanaticism over one of his books, he'd be damned concerned about those individuals though. Although I'd much prefer people were more obsessesed over fairy tales, or a good pixar movie, there's just much more craft involved, which encourages a persons development, also those things tend run deep inside the culture of a society, which can lead them to explore alot of other facets that encourage growth. As my original point was, the show in no way shape or form deserves the fanatic obsession it's getting, especially from grown males. I don't think C.S Lewis would apprecite the die-hard obsession because it restrains a person of development, and it just limits a person of the greater possibilities. People are not going to grow by pursuing things that are easy, and from what I seen that comedy in that show is extremely easy.

You're not going to find ponies running around to be very stimulating in a few years, change sucks but it's going to happen. The more you obess over that cartoon the sooner you will realize how easy it is to pull off that sort of humor. (even cartoon jokes in the 90's were recycled, theres a ton of monty python skits that were blatantly stolen, and in the 90's there was an obsession with puns) I'm still waiting for you to post a clip from that show that's simpler than weird/faces sounds, the best you came up with was a pun, which cartoons have already done to death in the 90's. (90's cartoon titles were nothing but puns).

Anywyas, arguement you've been making can be sumarized to this:

complains that pony show is deeper than weird sounds/weird faces

posts video of ponies dancing around to electronic music.

calls it deep.

Not trying to belittle your enjoyment of the show since you're just enjoying the last few years of your childhood, but for the guys my age, like I said. It's time to move on. I'm not even sure why I decided to engage in this conversation with you as you were not even in my original point (which was directed at guys around my age).

Anyways that last line in that quote was a line from the bible, when I became a man I put away childish ways behind me, this includes childish humor that is very easy to pull off ya know. the bible encourages a person to be child-like but not childish, the obsession over this cartoon is childish, but curiosity from a writer that has wrote novels intended for children is child-like.

Anyways, calm down, I don't think I insulted you once. (me calling this show simple is not insulting anyone).

@Ganondox: drop it. You are never going to convince him of anything other than what he has already convinced himself.

@Klowglas: I find it amusing that you go on and on about how his defense of the show is too "religious" and "passionate", while your slamming of the show is no less "religious" and "passionate." Why do you feel such a fervent need to prove yourself to be "right"? Does it somehow offend you that others derive enjoyment from something you can't?

I agree with what Mr. Lewis had to say about "grown-up things." Think about that for a while.

Patronizing, judgmental and ignorant-sounding. Who made you the judge of what "adults" need to "get past" and what "full potential" means?

@everyone else: DON'T FEED THE TROLL.

I'm not obsessed, I could drop the subject now and not care. whereas you can find guys obsessed with thi pony show throughout the entire internet, hell I love games and it's impossible to avoid them there. I just think it's abit of a waste of potential when there are guys my age who think this show is the greatest thing ever, when it's so easy to pull off, and yes I've looked at tidbids here and there, it remains a puzzle to me how anyone with an adults mind can find stimuli there.

How am i trolling in telling adults to move past these limiting avenues for the things that push them to greater heights? I'm terrible because I realize these self-imposed limitations do nothing but harms ones growth? Also, you'd be more than surprised to see that I'm more than gentle. Try to bring this obsession into the real world and see how far you can get. The world will eat these invidivuals alive. They'll be met with nothing but shame and disgust everywhere, as they already are.

So why stay there when you can be armed with more intelligent comedy? That's the question that I just don't know. A whole wealth of brilliant entertainment is out there, and yet, people choose simple and easy over challenging and fascinating.

Because at the end of the day, people know for themselves what's best and right for them, and it's not your call to make.

If you like the show, great; if you don't, you're entitled to your opinion. But, on either side, don't put people down for their taste in pop culture.

Well yes, ultimately they are the captain of their own vessel, but it doesn't mean I can't tell them where to sail to for greener pastures though, and doing so doesn't make me a bad person.

I have never watched MLP:FiM, so it is not my place to say whether I like or dislike the show itself.

I am friends with some fans of the show, so I know that not all of the fans are childish.

What is weird to me, though, is how (especially on deviantART) ponies are invading every other fandom. I mean, they're making crossover art with Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy, Eternal Sonata... Heck, even Baten Kaitos has pony art!

I don't mind the fans themselves, I just don't like seeing:
1. Pony p0rn, and
2. Invasive (in terms of other fandoms) ponies

Yeah, I watch MLP:FIM. It's one of my favorite shows.
