I whacked both spammers as soon as I logged on, they'd certainly made a mess, each had quite the post count of spam. We seem to be having a mini plague of spammers based in India at the moment. There were another couple of spammers too who hadn't posted, I whacked them too. It is just one of those things we have to put up with; their longevity on the site is very limited, as soon as Cornflake or me logs in it is curtains for them.

How do you know they are spammers if they hadn't made a post yet?

Spammers tend to link to a fishy website on their profile from the very beginning.

They also use proxies and TallyMan can see which accounts are using a proxy that earlier spammers used

...or like one I've just whacked: joined via a proxy, posting to promote a spell-casting telephone service which would doubtless involve handing over a credit card number at some point - quite apart from being laughable in the first place.
I mean, really now.

Thanks, TallyMan and Cornflake! We knew you'd know just what to do! :)

This website would fall apart without Tallyman and Cornflake. :hail:
I can't believe it an hour without moderators and there were 50 spam posts.

meh! They really weren't very fun spammers. Run across some from China on other forums and we'd mess with them leaving memes and other comments. They'd respond politely (usually) and nearly oblivious to what we were saying. Which made it even funnier. These two were boring. Oh well.....

I was worried that captcha was going to come back again. Now an occasional captcha doesn't bother me at all but we all remember what happen that few months ago when we all got hammer with captchas and that was just downright awful.

So the spammer is back, making new threads 1 minute apart.

I understand that Alex is not willing to make any code changes to the current software, but surely there is at least some configuration setting in phpBB that can help with this? Can users < X days old and/or with < X posts be limited to creating 1 thread per day or something? (I've never seen spam posted as replies so far, only new threads.)
