Did you have any problems (at first) with hand-motor skills when you began playing the guitar? If so, how did you get better at playing the instrument?
I advanced pretty fast. I learned to play Metallica's "For Whom The Bell Tolls" and "Enter Sandman" at near perfect left (minus the solos) within the first two months. By the 4th month I was busting out "No Remorse" and "One". Hammer-on/pull off's are my specialty and I'm do them way too much but I love them....and they sound so god damned cool. I developed a thrash style of playing back when I was 13 and 14 and its only been getting better ever since.
I have no problem playing what comes to mind, but when it comes to reading music I stumble a lot so I abandoned reading it altogether. Well...reading and playing at the same time. I can read it and memorize the majority of the riff and take it from their by ear.
Unfortunately I noticed my left hand going numb on me 20 minutes into playing about a month ago and now I can't play for longer then a few minutes without my hand going numb. I think I have a pinched nerve or something. I really hope it goes away, but I've pretty much had to hang up my guitar and bass for awhile
