Why are a lot of moderators resigning?
^it seems so.
like i say, it's fortunate that this place is a lot more self sufficient and level headed and does not need as much policing, compared to lots of other chaotic sites ridden with poo flinging i've visited.
humiliation and ignoring by itself, can be a really powerful disincentive.

Eventually we might have have a triage system. Protect a couple a section and let then others sections become hell.

Ostracisation works too. There has to be other consequences beyond the disciplinary/rule breaking ones.
I've always thought that the mods should go easy with the offensive post deletion/removal because it gives that offensive poster a "get out of jail free" card when it comes to facing the social consequences of what they said. The posts are gone and people can't see what a dick they really are. Plus with the post removed the poster isn't gonna learn that saying offensive things results in people not wanting to be friends with you. Yes, we understand that people have trouble discerning the social rules and boundaries of what's acceptable to say and what's not, but we should be teaching them. Harsh I know.
The mods can still delete the obvious such as spam and first post trolls though.

I always thought it did the opposite, users would see it and think they got away with it because they didn't see them get warned about it in PM or get told to knock it off through PM so they would assume it must be okay behavior.
The con part of removing posts is it makes it look like they were banned for no reason.

Well, warn them about it in the open then.

How does Alex pick new users for mod positions? What's that process like?
The current mods just choose users based on their posts and then refer to Alex to decide if they're good candidates. However, if you ask to be a moderator then you're automatically disqualified. I got a PM from Tallyman saying that they picked me to become a mod about a year ago but I declined it, saying that I had limited time, so obviously I didn't become one.
i also heard that he (Alex) hand-picks potential mods himself. i can't believe everything i hear - had this ever happened as well?

Ah, I see. Then it's just three; puddingmouse, Who_Am_I and XFilesGeek
i haven't seen puddingmouse around here
all of the current moderators don't have the green mod badge (just the greening) of the name, and some that have retired or left the site altogether do. i don't know why it's inconsistent, then again only the Almighty Alex has those powers.
i get why it causes confusion.

She's around, but not the most frequent poster.

Yeah, it causes confusion. I don't know why their group setting isn't changed.

That reminds me. I think I jokingly nominated myself for moderator once and Alex took me seriously, hence him rubbing my name out as a potential candidate
Not that I could do it anyway. My approach to people wouldn't be the most sensitive.

I thought you were serious and then I forgot about that thread. hat was four years ago wasn't it?
My humor has been taken seriously too on here and rubbed people the wrong way. I remember the time when Hopegrows took one of my jokes seriously when I said she had an aspie fetish or when I joked if the adult autism issues was her new section for giving advice. I had nothing against her and meant nothing personal by it but she was that paranoid. I did like her but then I lost respect for her for how she treated me and decided to believe my April Fool joke and use it against me.
