I am new to chat rooms. In fact 3 days ago was the first time I ever gave it a go.

How do you highlight a section of someone else's entry so you can reply to their particular comment?

How do you get a really cool picture for your user name?

My son Vlad loves dinosaurs too! He's got the entire Walking With Dinosaurs collection on dvd, and watches it all the time. I just wish we lived closer to a good museum or to dinosaur dig sites. We have taken him to a Devonian fossil site, which was pretty cool. He likes ammonites.

He hasn't been diagnosed yet, but I'm pretty sure he's an Aspie. I think I am too. No one knew much about it when I was 7, so people just thought I was weird and smart. Now that I figured it out, things make more sense.

I'm not sure how or when we'll tell him. I do wish someone had told me when I was 7. Make sure you tell Daniel there's nothing wrong with being an Aspie. It's just a different set of abilities. There are lots of things that Aspies are better at than NTs, and those gifts can come in very handy.

Unfortunately, yes, people can find it annoying. When someone asks why Vlad is acting like he does, I try to explain that certain things are hard for him, like making small talk, but that he's good at other things, like drawing and doing puzzles. It's especially hard for him when a routine is changed. It's not that he wants to annoy people, it's just that some things are hard for him. If the average person was asked to do something that's easy for him (like drawing an anomalocaris), they'd probably get frustrated too.
Everyone has things they are good at and things they are bad at, and it makes the world a better place. Someday Daniel might be a paleontologist, and discover new dinosaurs. He'll be good at studying fossils in detail, and notice things most people wouldn't, because they'd get bored after a few minutes.

For me, it seems like people will notice the things I'm good at, and say they wished they had the talent or patience to do that. Then they'll get annoyed because I'll babble on endlessly about something no one else is interested in, or because I won't look at them when they're talking. They don't seem to realize that they have gifts too. Sure, they might not be able to draw like I do, or make quilts, but making eye contact and noticing when other people are bored comes easily to them.

If people could imagine a world where everyone was expected to be able to figure out square roots in their heads, knit a sweater without a pattern and be able to identify different species of trilobites, and that if they had problems doing any of these things they'd get labeled as "special needs", that's what it's like to be an Aspie.

You can either just left click and run your cursor over the part of their post you want, paste it in your reply, highlight it, and then click on the quote button which is above the white box and on the far left (a series of blue lines with inverted commas at each side)

OR

you can hit 'quote' on the top right hand side of the person's post and you will reply with a quote of what they said in your box. You can delete bits you don't want to keep in their quote.

I'm so glad we've told Daniel now - even though it was only a few days ago. We live about a 45 minute drive from an Asperger's/Autism specialist bookstore. I went there today and bought him a few books including 'My Autism Heroes'. He loved the discussion this generated.

In fact my 8 year old N.T. son suffered some envy - almost wishes he's an Aspie.

Getting Daniel diagnosed was a stressful process, but I'm glad we went through it. He now has support from the school with sessions with the Special Ed teacher. In Queensland, Australia we're entitled to a carer's allowance of A$50 per week which helps out with books and medical expenses.

Daniel has one friend (N.T.) equally obsessed with dinosaurs. They love sitting together discussing dinosaurs and reading books. His friend's mum has been great - she's been searching the web to get info about Asperger's so she can understand Daniel better.

I come with high res scanners, Photoshop, can edit for web, how do the rest deal with this?

Daniel will want to speak with you - he's gone to bed now but is on holidays for 2 weeks now - yay! The official school holidays are only 10 days but we're keeping the boys out for a few extra days because it's been so exhausting and stressful for Daniel.

By the way, he only likes to be called Daniel - not Dan.

Daniel has just wandered out because he can't sleep. Daniel says, "I like big magnetex but some are funny because they are funny shapes. The other ones are balls and lines. It is my birthday today and I am now 7. I had my party on Sunday (4 days ago)"

Helen says: They are sticks with magnets either sides, and magnetics balls. There are also other funny shapes with magnets attached. Daniel is good at making cool monstors with them. He made a big sea snake.

Daniel invents new games all the time. He constructed a leggo world and used leggo men and a small dragon. They all took turns trying to destroy each other. They also had to watch out for the magnetex sea snake.

By the way KBABZ - you claim to have handed out 19387 KBABZ awards - I think you've lost count because you keep using this same number whiel continuing to hand out more awards. I think you Aspies were supposed to pay attention to detail ... ha, ha

School holidays just started for me too! I like playing with Lego, although I don't have any pieces, sadly.

And I swear I updated it at least three times today!

I'd construct giant towers if I had some Magnatex?

Daniel's favourite thing to build is big, bad monsters.

Tomorrow, we're going to stay with Smelena's mum at the beach! Nanna has two dogs - a brindle staffie and an extremely obese husky.

The boys will walk the dogs, swim at the beach and ride their bikes. They also have another brother, Liam, who is 3.5 years old. Liam's favourite pastime is stirring Daniel.

But don't panic, we can use Nanna's computer to talk to you!

I have promised the boys to organise their own membership tomorrow. We will tell you their usernames when it's organised.

do they still make lego like they used to? the stuff i see in shops now is all bionicle stuff with moulded bit everywhere.

They have lego like they used to with the plain shapes. There are also lots of moulded bits. The best of both worlds.

I regularly step on small bits of lego - ouch!

We used to borrow lego from the toy library but the stress of finding all 150 pieces to return was too stressful (they count all the pieces and find you if bits are missing). The boys have accumulated lots of lego for Christmas and b'day presents.
