Linking is no crime. The proper people to take this up with, in this situation, would be the Internet Archive folks. Alex didn't make "those pages", nor did he, himself, make a mirror. It's something of a misnomer, because the archive/mirror itself is nowhere to be found on WrongPlanet. I disagree with him on a lot of things, but this is one thing I'm with him on.
It sounds like a lot of people don't understand. The mirror itself is not "on" WrongPlanet. Take a look at worldofends.com, it's a great read (it's short).
From both a legal and common decency point of view, there is absolutely nothing wrong with referring people to the mirror module on the site. However, from a pragmatic point of view, it would make sense to just remove it, rather than further all sorts of ill will.
It's odd. It's sort of like this time on the boards on aspergerinfo.com, I had a bit of an argument with a woman on the boards (who called me all sorts of name and was generally horrible). Several people PMmed me and said that they thought she was being completely out of line. Well, she ended up leaving the site forever because of something I had said about it. Apparently, to others, she was a great resource, but to me, she was a rude, self-aggrandizing jerk. I've since left, because I figure no one there will want much to do with me, because they might mistakenly attribute her leaving to my actions, and also because if they genuinely find someone like that to be a positive asset, they probably aren't very good people.
Edit: to clarify, i'm not talking about the the person who ran Oops wrong planet (though she sounds mean as well), just relating a similar situation.

I think she has provided a great service, but if she no longer has the site available herself, perhaps she no longer wants it on the web.
Since I participated in this thread, I feel bad about contributing to unwanted exposure for a person who seems to want privacy right now.
She has done our entire AS community favors in the past and I feel presently she should be afforded the same consideration, unless Jypsy otherwise indicates.
.....just my opinion and as a non-properly introduced semi-lurker I include a grain of salt..

In response to unwanted publicity, there is an analogy to be made that is basically apt. If you were to write a letter to someone, publish a magazine, or publish a book -- and you don't want people to read it anymore, what the hell can you do? Would it be right to want to go destroy all copies of it?
In this case, a third party has made an archive of her site for other people to read. Like it or not, the archives are there, and there's nothing we can do about it. It's up to her to get those removed.
I've had some pretty bad things on my own site that are in there. I guess that's sort of the purpose of it, so that content on the web is not lost as easily. Hmm, maybe I should see about getting some stuff removed. ![]()

Greetings all,
Autism Diva would think that Asperger's/autistic people of ALL people would understand that sometimes it's hard to communicate feelings. Sometimes there are no words in the English language that fit. Sometimes an autistic wants someone else to speak for him or her. Sometimes there is no way to explain a motivation ('8O')
jypsy was not asked about how she felt about "wrongplanet.net" showing her archived site "in a window" - to be specific. It only added to the confusion when somone from this board said he was "mirroring" her site.
Autism Diva thinks most people who need to get at the information that was on jypsy's site know how to find it without her site.
Even, Autism Diva knows about the internet archive.
And she's ancient.
Search engines are our friends. Anything that was there on jypsy's site should be available elsewhere.
Why would anyone want to aggravate jypsy? She has never harmed anyone and has helped thousands.
Why does Alex want to be a further cause of aggravation when he's already been told that jypsy doesn't feel well?

Here's the deal with copyrights
The person who creates something, or has ownership of something has control over the following.
- How the material is created
- How the material is presented
- How the material is distributed
- Who may see or access this material
- How the material is used by others
Also the owner of the material has the right to seek compensation from people in exchange for showing them that material.
All of the above is simplified in the form of the ubiquitous phrase "All Rights Reserved."
It was the inalienable of jypsy to take the site down, and if she wishes it not to appear anywhere else on the net, that is her inalienable right also.
Since it's on the web archive, it's them that she we would have go thru to have her site blocked from public access
My advice to alex and dan would be to get her approval to have the site appear here the way it does.
At the bare minimum, I would set it so there is just a simple link that takes you to the archive and away from WP, that way WP is not involved at all in any way with her site other than just the simple link.

I have taken the time to consider this and I have decided to remove the framed version of the page. I am sorry for the trouble caused, but please realize that the page is still accessible from archive.org.
[link removed after a complaint was filed.
I hope you can accept my apologies but everything I did was in good intentions. I did not realize that Jypsy was not happy until I received an email from her. After receiving an email from her, I immediately took down the framed version of the website.

People should think of that before putting a site up, and at least take the minimal steps required to prevent it from being indexed and archived by the search engines. Once Google has you in their cache you can't go back to being anonymous. I mentioned this to Alex in the Work forum when he started asking people what they do and how much they earn; he insists that this site be searchable via Google but that's simply not the sort of thing I want stored in Google for the rest of my life, and therefore I refused to answer the question. I learned this the hard way when I posted a message (with my real name) to an "adult" usenet newsgroup in 1994 and it turned up in a search in 2004. Every message we post on here could be around for a long LONG time.

An Author once told me that once you post a poem, a story, a picture or basically put anything on the internet, it no longer is yours. He said it will belong to the web whether you like it or not so be careful what you post. Whether you want to believe this to be true or not, I tried to take it to heart. What we post on the World Wide Web just may outlive us. Just a little ominous something to ponder.

I agree that its very hard (and even impossible) to get rid of content posted online. While your professor's view is very exaggerated (you still technically own the content), the sentiment is very accurate.
I have somewhat offtopic, although slightly related story. Because I'm a public figure, people have said untrue negative things about me online. I have realized that this comes with the territory. I know that it would be very hard to try to get them removed. The same goes for something I put online.
Despite my feelings on the issue, I believe that I have no choice but to remove the link to the archived version of the Oops WPS site. This is not because I believe that it was wrong to link to the site, however. I still believe that it is entirely morally OK to link to another site on the web. I have received a complaint from the individual who originally created the Oops WPS site.
If you don't believe me and you think that I'm merely trying to censor you, please read the email I received:

I realize that an honest mistake can be made, for example: originally posting a link to her site here without her permission (I wouldn't have thought to ask permission, myself, point of fact). But jypsy seems a nice person, having written her myself, and I can't imagine she would have a large problem with us having then asked for permission to link to it, because as she said there's a lot of valuable information there. I don't particularly identify her as a selfish person, and can only imagine if asked nicely enough, would have been willing to allow the link.

On a somewhat related topic: I would have no problem with Jypsy's site simply having a placeholder saying that the site was permanently closed, and possibly adding a disclaimer explaining why the site was closed-- I just was a bit disoriented, to say the least, when I went there and found a blank page with no explanation whatsoever.
