Q='Queer'. I really dislike that label/name. Times have changed, but when I was coming out it was a derogatory term the media often used for gay people.

I feel derogatory labels like that stopped people coming out until the late 90's, when it almost became fashionable to be LGBTQ, including my older sister - at long last: In particular, our government had quite a few high-profile MPs in the Cabinet who were out. Though I didn't necessarily agree with the politics, I think it helped. Nowadays, some people are proud of the 'Q' tag. Attitudes have changed since its derogatory use, thankfully.

The Q means "questioning", and I've seen people also say it means "queer". As someone else mentioned that was a derogatory term before, and I've still seen it used as such so I personally don't like to use that word.
