Yeah, and there's also this: untranslability, which encompasses both language and culture.

It's a fascinating subject though - I can tell you that when I switch languages, I never translate per se, I just switch my thinking from one language to another, I don't think real fluency is possible without doing it.

That just reminded me, I knew a guy at uni who had one Arab parent, one Pakistani parent and had grown up in Yorkshire: he said he thought about faith/religious issues in Arabic, family and friendships in Urdu and work & pop culture stuff in English. He said it had to be like that and if he tried to use a different language for the type of thought in question it didn’t work and he’d get confused.
