There’s another “America” where guns aren’t even in people’s thoughts. I am in that America.
I feel insulted when people call the USA “gun crazy.” Almost all people I encounter really are for gun control, and take gun violence very seriously. This includes some people I know who live in the “inner city.”
I’ve known only one person who owned a gun other than a hunting rifle.
I assume that was directed at me, you kind of replied to yourself, there.
That's because the people making the laws regarding driving and traffic tend to understand driving and traffic. The people making laws around guns haven't the faintest clue about guns. I expect you'd protest if someone wanted to make it illegal to sell cars that can go faster than 30 mph, can contain more than 2 gallons of gas in the tank and insisted that automatic transmission is something only professional drivers need. Oh, and anytime a car was used in a crime, it would be made illegal and confiscated from people owning that same model of car.
Better argument.
I don't think anyone has ever tried to confiscate any guns from any current gun owners. I have only seen people talking about wanting stricter gun laws for who can own a gun and I think anyone who feels threatened by it are the ones guilty or else they wouldn't feel threatened.
In fact it's only the right wing I have seen mentioning about their gun rights trying to be stripped away and how liberals want to out law guns and that is all a straw man there.
People use guns to hunt with. I am pretty sure there are liberal hunters too.

If you could humour me Kraftie please, for the purpose of helping me to understand who specifically this topic is aimed at, we could exclude the rest of the earth and New York from this section of people that are "gun crazy"? Anywhere else?

It has to do partly with their ego and partly because a significant percentage feel like god when they hold a gun though their ability to hit anything other than their foot might be a bigger problem.
I see this as a bit like a teenager and their first car; they think they can drive and proceed to crash when trying to do something stupid.
Back in the days teens used to do something that was called cruising. It was their way of socializing and teens did it to show off their new car and they would drive around on the same block. Then it became a problem in most cities so they started to make laws against it. Sadly this would target young drivers and people who were trying to find a parking spot, trying to find a certain place or if they left something behind so they had to turn around and go back and get it and bam, accused of cruising if am officer saw them again that same day in short amount of time.

This is not how the media constantly present it; normal for them to warp things like always. The reality is that no-one can ever know just how many "feel like god" when they hold a gun. Within that group are all the psychos and the people with anger management issues who go out and shoot to get rid of this anger.
My personal view on gun ownership? They should only be in the hands of the Police and Military who are extensively trained to handle them safely.
I do often wonder just how much safety training civilians get.

This....isn't a thing that makes sense. How is this an argument? "I think the only reason you don't want gun control to be this strict is that you would be excluded from owning a gun if it was". And "guilty" of what, exactly? Guilty of wanting to own guns? And you do realize most criminals don't exactly care about firearms laws, right?
As for confiscation, I've seen it happen. In the wake of the Utöya massacre, the police just quietly decided that Mini-14s are now illegal with no actual legal justification, and launched a forced buyback program with threat of confiscation unless complying.

Yes, and if we are to be precise in our terminology, it's the Republicans that are liberal when it comes to guns. I'm considering getting a new gun for hunting. It looks like this:
There's a very real chance I'll get my application denied. Not because I'm not qualified and perfectly suitable to own it. Not because it has any capabilities beyond what is reasonable in a hunting weapon. no, it's because it doesn't look like a gun from 80 years ago, and is therefore modern, scary and militaristic.

It’s mostly people who believe life is a Charles Bronson movie.
Thank you Kraftie
Right, ok so this thread is directed at a small segment of the American population.
A more accurate thread title and less of a broad sweeping, generalising click bait title would be "Why are a small amount of American people so crazy about guns?"

Well, how crazy is crazy enough to be called "gun crazy"? Plenty of people have guns as a hobby, many to a mildly obssessive degree. I wouldn't think this to be a site that had a problem with obsessive interests.

^Depends on the definition of the term "crazy" and the context for the person assigning the label?

So it's a completely subjective value judgement with no tangible criteria. Then any comment on how large or small that segment of the population is is meaningless.

It would appear so, though I've noticed these topics are more palatable if the out group is clearly defined.
