Great question! Just the notion of a few specific words carrying a few different meanings, contexts, etc. etc. somehow stimulates those parts of the brain which (however briefly) transcends those mundane routines.

Yup, it is an intellectual exercise.
Aspies are known for "Punning Around" partly because we lean more to the intellectual side of the "Intellectual Vs Emotional way of thinking" curve. 8)
