Lots of things I read about Aspies is that we tend to mature slower than our peers & on average our mental age is a 3rd less than our physical age but of corse there are plenty of exceptions. Maturing slower involves us having our sh!t together with life later than our peers. We're slower to graduate college, slower to get jobs, slower to become independent, slower to get good relationships, ect. People are expected to be less mature & less independent in their 20s than in their 30s. 20 something people are kinda expected to be working crummy jobs, going to college , be dependent on their parents, & they are kinda encouraged to do stupid things sometimes. I don't know if this is the case for you or not James but if you are one of the Aspies who matures slower & gets their life together slower, perhaps people are harder on you because they feel like you should be more responsible & successful by now. People can be clickish & look down on others. Even if you are as mature & responsible as your peers, it can be much harder for us Aspies to keep up & we have a harder time handling all the responsibility & stress compared to our peers. However there are also Aspies who have an easier time as they get older. We can develop coping skills, get jobs that we can handle easier, make changes to our living situation that benefit us, find decent romantic partners, learn to work on ourselves & accept ourselves more.

There's also non-autism related reasons why life can be getting harder as people get older. People tend to develop worse physical & mental health as they age. Times change & younger people can more easily adapt & keep up with the rapidly changing times.
