The PCR is the usual COVID test administered in the United States. It is not the "rapid" test. Most entities require the full PCR test as proof of a negative test; the "rapid" test is frequently not enough.
It can take a few hours; but it usually takes at least one day for the results of the PCR test to come in. For the "rapid" test, it only takes about 15-30 minutes.
It comes from Polymerase Chain Reaction. It tests for the presence of genetic material from the SARS-2 virus (which is the virus which causes COVID-19).

The nasal swab? I've had it three times now. I just didn't know that term for it. I don't know of anyone who has had the one called a rapid test, or how that's done.

Yep. It's a nasal swab.
There is also a saliva test which serves the same function---though it's not always available. You have to expectorate about 3 cubic centimetres of saliva into a test tube.
The "rapid" test is also done with a nasal swab.
I've done the "rapid" test about three times; the regular PCR test maybe 15 times (or perhaps a bit more), and the saliva test twice.
