They don't have to be mutually exclusive, nor come and go. Some of the best friends I still have today I met in college 30 years ago.
Exactly. It kinda seems like projecting one's own negative social experiences and assuming they'll be universal.
Being able to make and maintain friendships makes a lot of struggles easier, either directly or indirectly by providing emotional support. College/university is a good place to meet people with shared interests, making it an ideal place for friendships to potentially start.
