For me, I'm agender. I don't "feel" like a man, but I also don't "feel" like a woman. This is different, imo, from being a biological female and simply not questioning your gender. Likeeee.... if you're a cis person, you may not "feel" a gender either until you dig into it. Because your gender doesn't differ from your sex, so you're comfortable being referred to as your biological sex. But for me, I would prefer to not be seen as either a man or a woman.

Watching the beautiful documentary Will & Harper with a friend, a thought popped in my brain, to which none of us had an answer to: I don't know why I identify as a man (I'm a cis gay man). Although I asked about this dilemma several on social media several times, I think your comment is the closest I've gotten to a fully satisfactory explanation. So thank you for that :)

Its an interesting topic.

I sometimes wonder whether a persistent drive for authenticity with less focus on meeting social expectations within our neurotype is a key factor?

Agreed, imo it's the lack of drive to conformity.

i'm not convinced that the high rates of same sex attraction and gender identity issues in autistic and adhd individuals are due to social reasons. i think there's something more fundamental, in the brain wiring.

i think we're only familiar with our own bodies, often very in our own heads, and don't understand the desire to seek out difference or find your opposite like "typical" people do. in some autistics this results in same sex attraction. in others, like myself, it results in a desire to be the opposite sex. i was born male but i couldn't be attracted to males, i couldn't imagine ever playing the "straight man" role and was disgusted by my own body, i felt like i should be a woman and am attracted to women. i was diagnosed with gender dysphoria when i was 16 and with autism when i was 17 (was diagnosed with adhd as a kiddo). i transitioned male to female starting when i was 19.

i think its a brain thing. it wasn't about a social role. men and women are different, male and female bodies are different, and the male body felt unnatural and alien to me. it wasn't about social gender norms, i don't care about those one way or another, i'm pretty tomboyish for a woman, i just felt wrong in my body.

I don't identify as male or female. I am AFAB (born with female biology), but I don't consider myself a woman. Some consider gender to be a separate concept from biological sex - gender is "in your head", biological sex is outward phenotype.
