I see. What had confused me is that last time it happened the whole thread had gone, whereas this time it was still there exactly where it had always been. If I remember right.
Whether it's a post removed or the thread it's on, the end result will be the same if you click on a link in the related thread update alert PM.
Posts
and threads are moved to a hidden forum.

What also confused me is that when posts have been removed before, there's been a moderator's post explaining that there's been a removal, complete with the grounds for the said removal.
That usually happens when several posts were removed because they disrupted the flow of a thread - off topic side-tracks, arguing and so on, or occasionally when a particularly disruptive member in a thread has been escorted off the premises.

But this time there wasn't an explanation. I guess the rule is that when posts are removed on the initiative of a moderator, there's an explanation given, but when they're removed on the request of the author, there isn't?
When single posts are removed for any reason there is normally no notification posted, although anyone is free to ask
privately for information about the removal (which owing to privacy concerns may be quite limited in detail).

I thought people could remove their own posts by clicking a delete button, but maybe that only works until the post reaches a certain age, like the edit button? How old does a post have to be before it can't be altered / deleted by the user?
The "Delete" button

attached to a post is a different animal in that it will physically and completely delete a post from WP.
This is irrevocable - when it's gone, it's
really gone.
But a post can't be deleted when someone has posted after it, although it can be edited within a certain time limit. A substitute for a complete deletion can be had if the post is edited to say "(deleted)" or even the ultra-terse "." and again, this is irrevocable.
The age of the post isn't relevant - if it's the last post on a thread it can be deleted by its poster.
