Religion is a menage a trois between philosophy, metaphysics, and literature.

Really, for what more could you ask?

Since metaphysics is already just a branch of philosophy that would make it a redundant member in your three-some.
Religion does not need a written record in order to exist, so literature is therefore more of a voyeur than a participant.

I'll say it again: the function of religion is to provide a culturally common answer the question "why am I here?" The answer to that question determines how you will face death (whether it is your own or someone else's) and how you will behave between now and then. Religion is a descendant of philosophy because fear of death could not exist without self-awareness.

Philosophy (in the words of Rene Descartes) says: "I think therefore I am."

History says: "You are alive now, but eventually you won't be."

Religion says: "Act morally now because death is not the end and you will be punished for your mistakes after you die."

Science says: "Eat or be eaten. In the end we're all food for worms."

All these topics cause people to think a lot and discuss a lot.

If I want to post something about a certain topic, I could write
"Philosophy: topic name enter here"
or
"Politics: topic name enter here"
or
"Religion: topic name enter here"

This could cause less confusion.

The three have a lot in common. They deal with how people view the world, and they are easy to disagree about.
