interested in moderatorship
Given the stability of some of the members on here, id say you have that potential to cause serious harm unintentionally as a mod. Even more so intentionally.
Yeah, I think I fully appreciate what you're saying. Sometimes this job is a matter of keeping the agitators who are down on the street yelling, "Jump! Jump!" away from the attention-seekers who are up on the ledge threatening to jump. Fortunately, it rarely gets so dramatic. The most common problem is dealing with members who can't discuss the issues without resorting to common name-calling.

The point is how would you appraise somebody or yourself on that criteria?
What constitutes quality posts?
Why proactive? When Alex told the moderators to be more like a fire fighter putting out fires?
Is it productive to overrule a fellow moderator without discussing it with him?
Lack of 'judgmentality'?
You need judgment to look over problems to see where rules apply but at the same time try not to judge people based on your misconceptions. That is a very tall order for anyone. What make you so sure you don't have these misconceptions or have trouble reading situations?
How you base someone’s quantity/quality of life experience or even find out what that is? Some people are still ignorant about things even though they’ve been around the block. Surely it is better to have a range of moderators that represent the demographic of this site?
Why do you think you are especially suited for training?
I certainly agree that remaining impartial so therefore calm and consistent are fairly solid ideas. I do think there should be room to make right wrongs. Sometimes consistency can't help you with the finer points. The job clearly requires some judgment.
It is pretty tall order for anyone, but the worst thing you can do as a moderator is work against a fellow moderator IMO.

There are lots of people who are certain that they know how to do this job. I consider them to be untrainable. Moderation privileges were granted to me in stages, and only after I had contributed substantially to the well-being of the site by bring problems to the attention of the owner. Today, Alex is able to be less involved in the non-technical aspects of operating the site. Problems should be brought to the attention of a moderator. Private Messages get the most immediate attention.
I would qualify according to that criteria, but I'm not sure about overall quality of posts. I am mature when I need to be, and I have more life experience and wisdom than many people my age.
I would be willing to do the job, and the power wouldn't get to my head. I'm responsible. I've administrated and moderated several forums before.
I post frequently enough. I am calm and understanding.
Of course, this is digger's thread.

In this case the fire fighters live in the same building they'll potentially have to hose down if a fire breaks out. It's reasonable to expect them to behave wisely and responsibly in dealing with everyday situations in which negligence could lead to disaster. I took "proactive" to mean both setting a good example in all posts and doing one's best to lend a calm, rational tone (again, by example) to threads that look like they have the potential to blow up.

Good idea.

“What constitutes quality posts?”
Some people post a lot junk, cat threads for example and other stuff that has nothing to do with autism. I do a little of that myself. A quality post contains information that an autistic might find helpful for coping in NTland, or has some other relevance to autism issues.
“Why proactive?”
By proactive I mean someone who will take the time to go to the trouble to report problems they see to a mod, not just problems that affect them directly.
“Is it productive to overrule a fellow moderator without discussing it with him?”
I do not reverse other mods’ decisions and I anticipate the same consideration.
“Lack of 'judgmentality'?”
For example, anyone who would refer to another’s life (anyone’s, not just someone’s in particular) as “pathetic” is too judgmental. I would hope for someone who experiences compassion for such people.
“How you base someone’s quantity/quality of life experience or even find out what that is?”
The same way you develop trust, slowly and by degrees.
“Surely it is better to have a range of moderators that represent the demographic of this site?”
I’m naturally biased toward people like myself, Quatermass towards people like himself, Alex towards people like himself.
“Why do you think you are especially suited for training?”
Experience. When Alex asked me to do this, my first response was, “Is there a manual?” My point is that I’m very leery of people who feel they “know” how to do this, and there’s no shortage of them.
“I certainly agree that remaining impartial so therefore calm and consistent are fairly solid ideas. I do think there should be room to make right wrongs. Sometimes consistency can't help you with the finer points. The job clearly requires some judgment.”
There are gray areas. For that we consult other mods. I was disappointed TheMachine1 stepped down because I often found his perspective so very complimentary to my own. I don’t think I have all the answers.
“It is pretty tall order for anyone, but the worst thing you can do as a moderator is work against a fellow moderator IMO.”
Agreed. Has someone or something given you a different impression?
I hope you recognize that all of this represents my opinions. I don’t have anything remotely like exclusive authority when it comes to selecting new mods. My recommendation has been that individual mods select single individuals they feel would be suitable as they feel the need. The individuals would be given minimal authority and responsibility initially, and would initially be supervised and mentored by the selecting mod. Alex has final authority over all these decisions, and I haven’t heard anything from him on this issue.

Couldn't have said it better. In fact, I didn't.

Here's all I had.
But, I had that laziness trait down
perfectly. Hated to do anything.
Not really pure laziness, but more
trying to figure out what the lines were,
and almost never being certain enough
to act.
Which is best.

When they make you a moderator do they ask you for your permission first? Or do they just suddenly give you the title? I'm just curious, because it seems like some moderators didn't even want the job and act like they just had the position thrust on them.

But, I suppose one could have refused.
Certainly, you don't HAVE to do a thing,
which seems to be the case with a number
who have remained. Though, they may help
out with pure spam, when they see it. Why a
full list shouldn't be public, I think.

Out of intrest, all these requirements you suggest, why in particular those that make a good mod. Im not sure id agree with the whole lot, but then i dont mod here.
Those could be the Time Lords' words.

Actually, we're more like those poor sods who have to remove toxic waste before it poisons the rest of the populace. Or those guys in medievil times who had to shovel ordure with little thanks.
