You are talking a lot of s**t then you have the audacity to tell me I don't know what I'm talking about. You are not skilled, get over yourself. You didn't even know how the redirection or banning works. I'm not going to take lessons from you.

You can BS till the cows come home, you still don't know what you are talking about.

Yes they do sometimes catch criminals but much of the time it is not even worth the effort. Most of the criminals are caught when they try to collect, or transfer funds. If that doesn't concern them, as long as their careful it is much, much harder to track them down. It requires a combination of intelligence and technology. The Serious Organised Crime Agency (UK) has liaison officers in Nigeria, Russia, Asia, etc for internet crime. The FBI has Cyber Action Teams that travel to other counties and set up temporary control centres like they did in Morocco in order to catch a particular group. Internet trolls do not really concern the organisations that investigate that level of crime besides most trolls aren't even at level of that skill, or can be bothered about hiding their identity anyway. Nobody has ever been extradited for trolling. Regardless of if you do find them, and take them to civil court or whatever it still doesn't stop trolling.

And besides, why do you seem to be against this? I was just making a suggestion. Do you actually KNOW who is doing it, because a bunch of other people would like to hear about it. Or maybe I'll tell you about it on the other two nameless sites you like to post on, which seem to exist only to make a futile attempt to bash this site around...

I'm not against it I'm just saying, redirection is all very well, but whatever you do with the banned members is merely cosmetic. Beside what you do with them has to reflect the type of site you running generally. It doesn't really hold water if you do something like redirect them to a bestiality site and then complain to the authorities that you are being harassed. The reason the trolling escalated was more to do with the fact that a mod was acting in his own interest and even admitted it, rather than acting to the aims of the site. So the site became a bit of a joke site, especially after cal was banned. It was not really surprising that it got trolled. That is like a trolling wet dream.

It is not secret, if you actually look through the spam he actually deliberately revealed his former username just in case you hadn't already guessed. Btw that is libellous, I've done no such thing. Prove it.

You have not yet demostrated that you do know what you are talking about in regards to anonymity and security. You were making a bunch of assumptions about trolls that simply aren't true, and your knowledge of computer security is shaky at best. I never said that any of these methods are fool proof.

And for the record, yes I am skilled. I'm just simply not going to tell you to what extent, because it simply doesn't matter. I've taken several college level courses on programming and I am quite sure that my computer is very secure because I know how to do it properly. I could be truly anonymous on this site if I wanted to, but I have nothing to hide.

So don't go off making a bunch of assumptions without a solid ground to base them on.

Otherwise, why do you have such are hard time believing that you are NOT anonymous when you post online? Or when you are anywhere on the internet. Sure, they may not know the exact details about you, but the thing is, you are leaving traces behind (e.g. IP logging, tracing cookies, internet service logging, etc) That is all that is needed to identify you, if someone really wanted to.

That is not what you claimed earlier. First you rambled on about how we may never know who they are, and then you rambled on about privacy. However, I said that their identities simply don't matter. The only reason I brought up skill was because in my experience, a troll like the one who posted on here generally doesn't have any. You were assuming that just because they get around bans means that somehow they are unstoppable. They most certainly are not, most aren't clever enough to hide themselves, and all but perhaps the "professional" trolls are way too stupid to use more effective means of getting attention. All that you have done is brought up a bunch of ad hominems and irrelevant appeals.

Well, I never said anything about reporting them, its pointless to do that. It may be cosmetic, but it does actually work especially when done in succession, in my experience anyway. Trolls are a rare occurance and are easily identifiable by their behavior. And one need not always direct them to a porn site, there are sites out there that can do a much better job without obscenity just by the sheer annoyance. Why do you think that person responded to an earlier post of mine on this thread with the word "fa***t"?

What I don't understand is why you can't just report the mods for moderator abuse without making such a big deal about it? If you are talking about Mr.Mark, I personally don't see anything wrong with the way he moderates this site.

Or better yet, if you don't like this site, why don't you all just, you know, simply STOP POSTING. It is not a difficult concept to grasp. Why do you guys have to be attention seeking? Just what the hell are you trying to prove?

This is online after all, most of what goes on in this site has absolutely no bearing on our everyday lives. Not only that, but you and that group over at those other sites are the ONLY people I have ever seen that make such a big deal over a web forum. Clearly, anybody who makes a website specifically intended to stalk other people and bash other websites is in serious need of a life.

And yes I do know who that guy is. I just don't simply talk about it because idiots are a huge waste of time.

I said it was unlikely, but the tone of your posts, combined with your history does raise my suspicions. However, 100 suspicions does not make a proof.

==============================================

You should be grateful that the site admin even bothered to graced and tolerated their assinine benalities with a comment or concession at all, rather than banning them sooner.

My knowledge of security is shaky? Ok whatever. Have ever identified your own exploits?

Like who hasn't? Graduate level coding is not much to write home about nowadays. I've dealt with some shocking botch jobs from graduates.

Maybe you should take you own advice.

I'm not bothered about hiding my identity. I've got nothing to hide. Like I said I'm not taking lessons from you. As for trolling it is a question of managing the situation rather than it being much of a security issue. It is not practical to expect to eliminate it on a public board.

That fact that you don’t think I know about IP logging and cookies is a joke.

I was trying to explain about the redirection but of course you know it all so good luck to you.

This part, it is little more than "STFU & GTFO." More eloquently written, but style doesn't change substance.

Do you just quietly walk away whenever there's a problem with something you are involved with? It doesn't look like you've taken your own advice here. ;)

But this isn't about walking away from your problems. It's about getting over the fact that some people you meet online are going to be a**holes, and understanding that you may never have to deal with him/her in real life. Unlike other problems which are much more involving (and certainly not something you can solve by merely walking away), you can solve this one by simply turning off the computer or just not going to sites you don't like.

Are you implying that interactions with people online are trivial in comparison to those with people outside your home? Wouldn't that trivialize the people as well? :?

So, again, if a problem arises with something you enjoy, you should just walk away from it because you have that option, rather than trying to stick around and hopefully get things to improve? I don't see how this is any different in meaning than what I already commented on. :?

It's online, what the hell do you care what other people do on a specific forum. If they are a**holes, so be it. I'm not going to be bothered by it. Plus, if I don't like a site, I just simply go to another one. I'm not paying for it after all. And besides, what you see online is NOT representative of who they really are, so I don't attach myself to other people online too often.

Read the above quote. Are forums really that important to you, are you somehow not complete if you can't post on wrongplanet or anywhere else. Because you should know, what people talk about or do here has absolutely no bearing on everyday life.

I agree with you whole heartedly on this. That is very good sound advice. It is amazing how some people can get tunnel vision.

You may not like me but I wouldn't be here if I didn't want to. I get on ok with most of the members. Someone must like me. I'm sure I'm disliked by a number. It doesn't faze me.

It is a hasty conclusion, to say that someone will be completely different offline from how they are online. Will there be differences? Sure, but it is still the same person sitting at the computer as it is walking down the street.

Your above quote isn't all that supportive of this, since I don't find it to be all that accurate or sound. :?

It can have a lot of bearing, or not all that much. Again you are critical of anyone that takes more away from this site than you do, something you have no right to do. There are many people here that post on a daily basis, that enjoy posting here. Some that would likely be upset if they could not, much as someone that goes to the same coffee place every morning would be upset if it were to close.

Do you really think less of someone in either of those situations?

My experience is they have always been different in real life. But the fact that I've met them you can say it has some bearing on real life.

Please talk about yourselves and your ideas, and please refrain from making characterizations about other members or their posts. Thanks.

I think he means to not talk about former members, although this seems to be a generalized thing, for the little I have read here :P

I'd rather let him elaborate on what he meant. I want to know what he thinks, not what you think he thinks. :P
