Both Christian and Islamic extremism can be branded "fascist". Inciting believers to harm, even kill non-believers and scorning anyone who doesn't follow by rules is a world next to Germany 1933-1945. Thus neither should be toned down. I think that fascism is an appropriate word. That, or extremism.
Westboro Baptist Church is one such example of non-violent Christofascism.

The person who started this thread said nothing about "the legitimacy of the claims of 'Islamofacism Awareness Week.'" That is your interpretation. She merely posted the item for discussion.
Indeed I did only post it as an interesting article I read and thought others might like to see what is out there.

Amen to that!! [and I don't have a clue what SCHIP is - I figure it isn't a weapon so thats a good start], PEACE j

yeah and i don't know about anyone else but i was responding to the article.
the words used in it and the topic at hand is being used more in a way to garner fear and loathing than to create any kind of knowledge.
knowledge would be more along the lines of how iran actually has slowly been moving towards more secularism and if we would just stop getting involved for once, they might actually become a legitimate world power.
but then again, we probably wouldn't want that considering how much we've messed with their government over the past 70 or so years.
just like why south america hates us...except they're too poor to get over here and attack us....well....so far.
Good points Skafather,
However Iran are not messing with you fellas, just trying to stop the US and Russia messing with them, I think they wish to go on with their own business for a start, it takes a lot of energy and resources feeling paranoid and fearful all the time, causes some weird social fallout...
peace j

i don't know if that was directed at me but i never said iran was messing with us. mahmoud has stated anti-israeli statements before and so he is considered a direct threat to the US because israel is the 49th state. and with israel's paranoia and religious cultism driving the US's foreign policy....we're going to war with them for any kind of nuclear ambition short of us running the nuclear plants for them and employing white christian americans.
I don't understand why I have to be a right wing nut to oppose Islamic fascism.
All Bush has done is help the Islamic nuts. When the US government does evil things like launch unprovoked attacks on other nations it makes the terrorist actions of Islamic extremists seem legitimate to the average person in the Middle East even if most don't agree with extremist ideology.
I think the only solution to the loony Islam problem is a little reverse psychology. We should stop giving oil money to the dictatorship in Saudi Arabia. Just cut off all financial ties and let the most loony of the Islamic extremist groups take over the whole place. We make a truce that they can do whatever they like as long as they don’t support terrorist attacks against the west (if they attack us all bets are off). Then maybe after living under the rule of Islamic loonies for 40-50 years the people living there will get tired of Islam and will begin to desire real freedom and secular governance.

on the defensive within the first post without taking in any kind of context. nice.
i actually agree with you to an extent as far as the "leave them alone" side goes. iran has been trying for a while to move towards a more secular government and our interference only lends credence and strength to the islamo-centrist movement going on throughout the middle east and prevents an ability to move towards a more secular iran.
not to mention if we left them alone, they'd leave us alone*.
as far as being a right wing nut to oppose islamic fascism. i categorize it as a pro-war stance to discuss "islamo-fascism" because that's mainly what it is used for here...cannon fodder for whatever war bush wants to start next. fascism is fascism whether it's the atheist fascism of hugo chavez or the religious fascism of the iranian shah. the way in which it is used and distinguished in the context of our current foreign policies and foreign ambitions is that to use it towards war.
so...if i may ask....why are you defending yourself on your first post in this topic?

IMO, the problem is that "right wing nuts," to use your term, commonly say that the war against what they term islamofascism is World War IV (for those of them who make the Cold War World War III) or World War III (for those of them who do not). They focus on the dangers posed by these supposed terrorists and ignore the state terrorism of nations like the U.S.

I was not defending myself. I was not responding to anything you said. I think I mostly agree with you.
Sorry if it seemed like I was butting in. I was not looking to join a debate, just to post my thoughts on the article in the first post. It accuses people who are "liberal" with not understanding the danger of Islamic terrorism or even defending extremists. I was just trying to counter that attitude. I think the US government and Islamic extremists are equal threats to world peace.

"right wing nut" = Pro-war, Pro-Bush, ultra-nationalist
I was just using the term "islamofascist" to to be consistant with the term in the original article. However, "fascist" to me is more just an emotive word for "bad people" than anything to do with Nazis or WWII. The Nazis and WWII are not a good analogy to religious fundamentalists and what is occurring today.

And while we're at it, let's stand back as God knows which Arabic countries declare jihad on Israel.

as an ex-muslim atheist I can confirm that islamic fanaticism is a threat on civilization but not more dangerous than global warming , the white house is trying to brainwash their people lately that global warming is just a conspiracy against US' economy : BS! I watched on National Geographic that Antarctica is already melting 20% faster , we ar in october and it is not yet raining in my country for exaple this year and this is very unusual , isn't that catastrophic already? global warming is not a joke ,that's for sure.
I am not against Islamofacism or any religion-facism Awareness Week but it is hypocritical to say that it's not less dangerous than global warming .....in fact they can't be even compared ! While Islamofacism will be just a dirty phase in human history not to mention the Zionist-fascism supported by the US ...the global warming will not , it will not be just a phase but it will be the end of the whole planet if we do nothing about it ...maybe not now , maybe after thousands of years but isn't earth safeness is our responsibility ?
It's funny that some creationist consultants in the white house are trying to explain to the people that global warming is a conspiracy while they are biblical creationists who believe in the 6000 yrs old earth and deny all scientific discoveries and studies as result years of hardwork in geology/astronomy/evolution ? . What about to give them the full authority to teach the world about science too?

That's what happened in Europe after about a millenium of fundamentalist Christian rule and general barbarism (with a few exceptions like Dante, but generally it was pretty barbaric). People finally re-discovered the cultures of pagan Greece and Rome and started listening to secular thinkers, including atheist David Hume.
I think the tragedy of the ME is having oil - without it the elites would have had to ensure a functioning economy instead of just selling oil, including a functioning educational system (Saudi Arabia is unable to even train its own staff to run the oil industry, and relies on poaching people from other countries, including for example Mexico).
