I honestly view my Aspergers as a gift from God. It allows me to view the world in a different manner then most people do - and it gives me compassion for areas that most people overlook.

Frankwoh said, "The vast majority of the aspies on this forum are secularists. Is not believing in God also an ideal Christian trait?"
Secularism does not mean the same a being an atheist. I believe in God and believe in secularism (the seperation of church and state) because I think people should have the right to believe what they wish and when religion and politics mix bad things tend to happen.

Sedaka when I put where the don't bear false witness quote came from as information in case anyone was curius as Goldenheart didn't remember which verse it was. I never said aspies don't lie. I know alot of aspies myself inculded that do not like lying and rarely do it, but I wasn't including that in filling in info that slipped someone's mind. I was trying to be helpful. Why would you imply I was lying you can look the ten commandments up and will see that that is one of them and you'll find them in both Exodus and Deuteronomy as I said, so how was I lying if it was the truth?

TheZach I like your view as your Asperger's being a gift from God to see the world differently and have compasson for what other people miss. Oftan I feel the same way. Did you know that in the middle ages the church often viewed people who today would oftan be seen as having some type of mental disorder as being blessed by God? When I first read about that I was surprised, but intreged.

A lot of the friends I have that have various special needs seem to have more faith then the majority of the church leadership and the church leadership seems to view them as inferior and it irritates me.

That would irratate me too. Church leaders aren't supposed to put airs on over others.

More often, impairments were seen as punishments from God, and mental illnesses were seen as demonic possession or moral weakness.

Yes. In some ancient societies, like Ancient Egypt, holes were drilled in people's heads so that the evil spirits would hopefully escape.

As late as the 1800s Epelipsy was attatched to being possesed and/or witchcraft and people were executed for it.

Reminds me of a rather humorous essay on trephiny, the practice of drilling the holes. There is a (rather small) modern movement for promoting that. They claim it allows the cerebrospinal fluid to expand and contract.

There is also a medical condition where that pressure can build up too high and it mimicks parkinsons disease - a friend of the family had it, and when it was diagnosed and treated, it was like he was 15 years younger. They have a small tube with a pressure release valve that drains excess CSF into the gut.

The syndrome exists to make progress in the humanity. Most of the important inventors (Edison, Da Vinci, etc.) had either HFA or AS. The low social skills is the price we have to pay.

Hi, I'm talking stricy middle ages. The demonic possesion concept did not resurface again till shortly before the reformation, except in sucide cases because Augustin thought it was a chioce caused by demonic influence over the mentally ill. There were of course regional variations. The practice of drilling hole in Ancient Egypt was rare and it doesn't apply to mideval Christian Europe. In many Ancient Near Eastern Cultures you couldn't harm or kill anyone who seemed 'crazy' or epileptic (even though they didn't use that term) for fear of bringing down the wrath of God, or gods in polythistic culture because that person could well be a prophet or special favorite of the divine.

Unless you include lobotomies.

I'm not sure Ancient Egypt had lobotamies or Midieval Europe yet. I'll have to check some of the translated medical/surgical manuscripts.

No. What I meant is that lobotomies involved drilling holes in people's heads.
