Really? I think not. You've stated:

You want them to suffer, in other words. That's known as torture. How have I twisted that?

But you said that I wanted also completely mentally challenged people to be tortured. I said I wanted those sort of people excluded. That's what I took issue with.

"Capital punishment", as in the legally delegated murder of a person.I will never impose the obligation on another to perform such an act.

If you were to meet myself and my niece, say, walking down the street, and you attacked her, I would kill you.Actually, I'd try rather hard to prevent it going that far, but if that was necessary, I would do it. I take full responsibility for all my actions.

The permanent incarceration of some offenders is as far as I can go. However, should they volunteer to undergo medical treatments that might result in their deaths I think I could live with that.(Provided they could be shown to be of sufficiently sound mind to understand what is being done.)

I think that this is the very best reaction to the issue that i've read in ages. It IS the issue of asking someone to kill someone else which is the most horrible. Unacceptable. ( equally horrific is the idea of delegating someone to perform experiments on another.)
And even questions of possible miscarriages of justice, and exactly who could be said to understand questions of right and wrong etc are in the end beside the point, which is just aswell considering how problematic those two issues are!!

So me too i vote "no capital punishment under any circumstances".

Hmm. You have a point there, ouinon. One of the problems with the death penalty is that the result of a Type 1 error (a false positive) is very much a disastrous one.

BTW, I've only just got the meaning of your name. 'Oui' and 'non'. Yes and no. I originally thought it was a weird misspelling of onion... :)

Yes, quite a lot of people do. I like it as expresses my tendency to react to things with wholehearted agreement or disagreement, only slowly followed by smaller and smaller yes/no zigzags towards a greyer, more subtle picture! I have also used the german version on another forum, janein, which people thought was a weird mispelling of janine!!

And "ouija" I think is already taken, though I don't think "nonnein" is...

 I'd not thought "ouija", but anyway it's only one side of the story/half the picture ! ! !

To return to topic  i thought that your thread was beautifully prepared. And that it's almost a shame that all the deep and lengthy arguments are disposed of instantly with the perfect reason not to ever agree with capital punishment. Can it really be so simple?
Weird. That just the right angle can make huge complex discussion irrelevant.
(i like it when that happens! It's so cut and dried ! )

Oh, not so completely irrelevant. The solution is simple. In cases like this, there has to be conclusive evidence. And of course an appeals process. I'm not a monster, at least of that sort. But I am not really in the mood for actual debate. I just wanted a vote and reasons why the worst criminals should or should not be considered outside Helsinki.

I'm for capitol punishment for all reasons you've described. I voted Eugenics, though I disagree with the naming for my meaning that I want them removed from society and as a burden to society.

As to the executioner, the victim or a family member of the victim could be offered the opportunity, or they could ask if anyone would like to rid our society of this blight upon it and take up the axe, as it were. It doesn't have to be forced upon anyone, and if no one takes up position as executioner, the offender could simply serve for life, .....or be starved to death.

It could also have some entertainment value.

In Saudi Arabia, people go to watch people get their heads and hands chopped off.

Nah. One of the methods I reckon would be a suitable coup-de-grace is too messy. Besides, public executions have a tendency to get out of hand, as history shows. Better it remain behind closed doors, as it were.
