They're nice, but it is not the most important thing there is. I kind of like the whole hierarchy system here, especially since people don't over emphasize it or cause a big pain over it. No one is really elitest at WP, so the hierarchy works. If people start to become elitest, then it may be a good time to reconsider the hierarchy. Like Bec and Serissa already said, the titles and ranks are cool. I don't think we need to get rid of them for any reason in the foreseeable future.

Removing rankings will not solve that problem. Removing post counts will. Get it right - I wasn't complaining about rankings.

i have to admit that i was taking the piss out of myself, more than anything. but there are a lot of posts of that ilk. (i.e., no specific individual, as far as i'm concerned).

I find it interesting and scary that the quality of writing is being judged. I find life hard enough to deal with in real life with out wondering if everything I type is also going to be subjected to the same scrutiny as every thing I say and do. All throughout this site I have seen people say they are insecure and nervous about posting anyway and now it appears (something new to me as I am now part of any other forums) that there are unwritten laws about what you can write that do not have to do with site guidelines. This is all starting to make me feel like WP has it's own set of Cliques just like the real world and that maybe I better develop a little more fear about what I say because I have serious issues with ever being referred to as any kind of whore, do to issues from my childhood, and I would rather not expose myself to any possibility of anyone thinking or saying anything even close to that about me or anyone else at any time.

I actually never look at post counts and they don't matter to me but I do think things that show you growth over time are always good for people. I am just freaked out that it could matter this much one way or another to so many people.

I say if people are posting BS just to raise their title and post count, that the moderators should just tell those individuals to knock that crap off!! ! :evil:

That is what moderators are there for, and I have to say we have a high abundancy of moderators floating around here.

Why should rankings be ruined for everyone because someone goes around posting rubbish?

Hate to play the 'devil's advocate' here:

But what if the posts some find are 'rubbish' actually aren't to that poster? Then how do you judge posts when it's all in an individual's perspective? After all, if you don't want to read them, don't bother.

It seems rather ignorant to judge others posts as 'rubbish' but then not expect similiar treatment back because they may find the person who claims their post is rubbish could be doing the same thing or from their perspective may be rubbish as well.

When do you draw the line? Some people are better at expressing themselves in text, others aren't. Are they any less worthy of posting just because they can't meet someone else's standards?

Yet the same people that will claim someone's posts are 'rubbish' will whine and cry because someone might think theirs is and suddenly it'll be unfair.

I don't mind, I find it interesting to see how much I've actually written (it suprises me ) but I gotta agree with the bird names... Some of them, like seagull, I can accept but I have no idea what the others are... let alone if they're even birds! But I don't think that's the point... I'm sure bird experts could explain that they actually are birds to me, so I'll leave it be .

it ain't that, yealc. it's about posts which are merely there to bump up post totals. the latter don't add anything to the discussion, even if they don't actually interfere with the discussion (trawling past them can be irritating, at times).

and, as you say - some people aren't as verbose as... well, me, for instance . so i don't feel it's wise to leap on people for assumed "post whoring", in case they are making a comment in their own way, as mish said.

I would have thought if anyone is posting a lot for a high post count it would be to up their rankings as post count is the sole judge of the rankings. Not that im accusing anyone of doing that.
