Back when the new testament was put together they cut something like thirty-six gospels down to four; my guess was do to the esoteric issues that they thought would cause in-fighting or cause people to debate the need for organization of the church. The gnostic scriptures were some of these discarded.
My guess, as time goes on and as we re-evaluate our reality from a secular and purely analytical angle, if we go back to religions they'll far more likely be the esoteric religions such as gnosticism or kaballah - they don't seem to dispute our sense of reality or our quest to understand it as much as they just state that as we go on and discover more we'll become more in touch with god as science deepens and perhaps find threads to follow that leave the world of our tangible senses.

The Bible mentions men living far longer than 120 years.
Yes it does, some people live for ridiculous amounts of time. Maybe it was all the natural food at the time?
The oldest recorded man in the Bible is Methuselah who lived 969 years. Genetically, if the telomeres(end cap genes) on all cell in the body were maxed out and there were no disease, it is theoretically possible to live approximately 1000 years. Given health issues today, after telomerase is a pharmaceutical humans could only live 2-3 hundred years, but that is due to disease.
im sorry, can u quote the source on that? im not saying your biological concept on aging is incorrect... but i doubt we can peg a shelf life... let alone attributing it to the said things, strictly speaking.

I agree, and I would go further to say that iamnotaparakeet is flat out wrong saying that the telomeres have anything to do with life span. The livespan of almost all vertabrates is determined by a maximum number of heart-beats. (about 1 billion if I remeber correct, 3 billion for modern humans due to impoved shelter, food and medicine)

telomere degredation is associated with aging... which is why that cloned sheep "dolly" died at a young age... cause her DNA had "old" telemores. im just saying i don't think we know enough about the process or even evolutionary rates for telemore degradtion to even hazard a guess as to how long people lived back during those times... not even gonna touch how evnvironmental factors affect this.
