LBJ during Vietnam. Nixon during Vietnam. So no, W will not be the first to step down in a time of war. This war can be expected to last forever (by definition the "war on terror" cannot be won) and I don't think it matters much who's in office- Hillary will continue the same policies as Bush, regardless of her rhetoric.

A neighbor told me no president has ever left and some people on Yahoo's old message boards wrote that Bush will attack Iran to stay in office. Looks like I believed incorrect information.

I wouldn't go to war for oil though, killing thousands of innocent people for no reason. Turn my back on the rest of the world. etc I know Uk joined in, but I was strongly against it. I knew it was wrong, and I was proved right. I may be a bad public speaker, but i'm not the President of the USA, catch my drift!

Who are these innocent people?

I think I read on an Internet news page that over 100,000 civilians died in Iraq as of a couple years ago but my memory or the news source could be wrong.

The Lancet study of October 2006 conservatively estimated the deaths due to the Iraq war as 650,000. It undoubtedly is appreciably more by now, thanks in part to the "surge" and increasing tensions in the northern Kurdish region, which had previously been relatively peaceful. A newer study, released in September 2007 and using a different methodology (but still getting results which validate the Lancet study) estimated over 1.2 MILLION deaths. Consider that Iraq's population in 2006 was estimated at under 27 million, and you'll realize that that's a pretty good chunk of their people we've murdered.

Quote:
According to the survey results, Iraq's mortality rate in the year before the invasion was 5.5 deaths per 1,000 people; in the post-invasion period it was 13.3 deaths per 1,000 people per year. The difference between these rates was used to calculate "excess deaths."

The Lancet study has been roundly and rightly ridiculed by anyone with knowledge of statistics. Of course it's sheer coincidence that the Lancet releases these 'studies' just before US congressional elections (and the previous study just days before the US presidential election).

Wow. If 1.2 million deaths is right then I think Bush murdered more innocent people than Hitler. Do you think Bush should be tried for war crimes and executed for genocide? It seems like Bush made the US the largest worldwide sponsor of terrorism.

6 Million Jews alone were slaughtered by Hitler; also in the past century over 100 million Christians have been put to death by communists alone. (Both in revolutions and standing governments.)

Oh please. Take a minute and read just how absurd the Lancet's fictional numbers are. (These links are also 2 posts up).

If you care about the facts, that is.

Would you like to refute the September 2007 study from ORB, completely independent of the Lancet? It wasn't right before an election, so you can't claim that bias.

Opinion Research Business (ORB) poll conducted August 12-19, 2007 estimated 1,220,580 violent deaths due to the Iraq War. A nationally representative sample of 1,499 Iraqi adults answered whether any members of their household (living under their roof) were killed due to the Iraq War. 22% of the respondents had lost one or more household members. ORB reported that "48% died from a gunshot wound, 20% from the impact of a car bomb, 9% from aerial bombardment, 6% as a result of an accident and 6% from another blast/ordnance."
