Actually that's entirely possible. At university the most qualified lecturer had a PhD in Computer Science, and in his first lecture he said that hard disks only have data stored on the lower surface, as the dust that collects on the top would damage the read heads (this wasn't an anecdote, it was a lecture on current computer technology).
I guess he figured once he had the PhD he didn't need to learn any more.
Too bad qualifications in computing are obsolete before you finish the course.
