I do think that we would have been much better off if we had simply allowed the Southern states to secede when they wanted to.

Fighting a big war over it was stupid.

I've read claims that we didn't need to fight a war to get the South back into the Union as they would not have been able to sustain themselves economically without the benefits of membership in the US. Not sure how true those claims are, but in any case I don't really like Lincoln and his actions during the war.

Smaller states are much more at the mercy of multinational corporations then larger ones, which is why I prefer supranational consolidations of states like the EU.
