Question... if a big fat ugly gay man gave you the eye and comments and whistles... how would you feel about it? How does it make it any different with women?

Uncomfortable. Coming from a big fat ugly straight man.

^True. Like I said compliments are great, whistling and yelling out,"Hey baby" in a moving vehicle is uncomfortable, I've personally experienced this when walking. No I don't ask for it or wear any short skirts or tank tops. I've had this happen to me a couple of times. It feels insulting and rude. This is just coming from my own experience. If I know them real well and they're playing around it's fine.

Ive never really understood the whole concept of "sex objects". Im not questioning that treating women that way is something that women really DONT appreciate. But what I dont understand is how it is an attack on their gender as a whole, or somehow insulting them for their gender as opposed to just being obnoxious, inconsiderate, and even threatning to them as an individual..... :?

I really don't think it's important WHY a woman chooses to classify that sort of behavior as inappropriate. But if you are genuinely confused about why some would classify it as sexist, it's because of the history of objectification that exists for women and not men.

It's wrong in both cases. But the view of a woman as existing solely for the aesthetic pleasure of men is a classic stereotype based on sex.

I personally just don't like it, but that is the reason why some would take it as a gender assault.

I know a lot of the time sexual harassment is not intended to be harmful. But if it still is, then, legally, it's considered discrimination. It's the outcome that matters, not the intent. We simply can't have a world where some demographic groups have a harder time participating in society than others do.

It's the same thing with disabled people in the workplace. A policy might not mean to discriminate, but if it does, and it can be changed, then it needs to change.

Why No, you are NOT sympathetic in the least. But you certainly Are very stupid, because your response makes it perfectly clear you have no idea what I was talking about  . But the fact that you make a joke about castration when I suggested that Ive wanted to be female from time to time shows me that you have much deeper psychological problem..................PENIS ENVY!! !! !! !! !! !

American Law defines sexual harassment as being one of several different things. A classic example is when employers(including bosses and supervisers they're sympathetic too)use their position of authority to extort sexual favors from female employees. But I think there IS a big difference between guys who make lewd comments to female coworkers in the workplace and guys who do it to total strangers on the street. I would imagine street harassment is, suprise suprise, perpetrated by Young(er)men towards young women. I have to wonder why construction workers are so notorious for it :P .

Who cares whether it's intended to be offensive or not, it's still offensive.

Ive been wondering lately-Why is it that when men do not restrain their sexual impulses(and just to be clear I am NOT talking about sexual assault)-such as the impulse to catcall or make sexual comments/gestures when they find a woman attractive its considered sexism. I mean, its certainly RUDE and Inconsiderate of the womans feelings but I dont see how its degrading to her entire gender. If a woman did that to me I wouldnt regard it as Sexism-rather as obnoxious, vulgar, and grossly impolite.

Such behaviour towards a single woman denotes a disrespectful attitude towards the entire gender; i.e. a belief that it is acceptable to treat women (a woman, and therefore women in general) in that way. Therefore, it can be seen as sexual discrimination: sexism.

Capiche?

Why YES, aridarr. Your quote just proves how totally ABSURD and ILLOGICAL radical feminist theory is: That such behaviour towards one individual that is offensive insults their entire group  ............*sigh* is absoulutely Assinine! :x

So, by your logic, in order to be sexist a man would have to traverse the entire planet and personally insult every woman in the world?

If I had a cat, and I set fire to it, that would be considered cruelty to animals, and I would be judged as cruel to animals (not just the particular animal, but all animals). That is because that single action shows a lack of regard for the life of other living creatures, and a capacity to commit violent acts against them.

Just as sexually harassing a single woman shows a lack of regard for women and a capacity to behave obnoxiously towards them (based simply on their gender), and a belief that it is acceptable to do so.

That is sexism. If not the action itself, then the latent disrespect it indicates.

This question is directed at men but it is in the women's section. never mind.

Honestly I have no idea as I wouldn't do that myself. I find it cringe worthy, I've never really seen a positive reaction to it. It is a sort of parody of the people who do it.

My logic

I think men are not sexist because we harass women, we are just a bit ignorant about it and if we do it we need to be taught that woman find it threating or offensive.

We are a bit ignorant about it because we love it when women harass us, so we just naturally assume woman like it when we harrass them and have trouble understanding why.

On the opposite side of the coin. Because woman don't liked been harassed, they don't harrass men, which is a shame because we enjoy harassment and miss out.

That's how it works.

If any women on here want to call be a sexy b***h, etc.. please do 8) If you don't I will just assume you are sexist because you are not conciderate to my feelings. :P

It probably depends on the man in question. Some are just clueless, some are wilfully disrespectful and believe women to be lower life forms. But any man with a shred of common sense would recognise when such attention is unwelcome.

I think we just see things differently.

I don't harass women by the way, well maybe in a more gentlemanly fashion.

Sure some men are sexist, just like some woman are sexist. I actually find women are just as clueless about men, they seem to over analyse you and come up with all these strange ideas. I've found women to be disrespectful and think men are lower life forms, reading some stuff in here for example.

From my point of view I find the most frustrating with woman is that they are so sensitive about everything (well from my point of view they seem that way), but then again I love their sensitive side.
