"The end of the world" is too cryptic a phrase and fraught with far too many possible events. It can be interpreted too many ways, all of them politically motivated.

Hmph. Seems everyone's got their own spin on this theme. If the entire planet decides to explode like a cherry bomb, it won't matter who saw it coming and who didn't.

Isn't there some asteroid out there that's supposed to obliterate Earth? An actual celestial body that's been documented and studied, and is allegedly on its way here right now. In the movie, they simply flew into space and blew it up. But everyone knows that won't work.

It's got me a little concerned given that mathematicians have used fractal geometry to show the Mayan calendar from a graphical standpoint.

If anything I would say that it is more a change of consiousness than the end of the enitre world. It would be simmilar to the end of christianity, the religion may no longer exist, but heir are still people (do not have anything against christians just making an example)

Calenders are arbitrary in terms of the year number. Even if you have an absolute starting date (like Ussher or Julian), it means little or nothing metaphysically.
