People who dislike/hate religion
Creating atheists?
I find it silly that the anti-religious use quotes to fight against the religious. It is like when the religious use quotes when debating the non-believers.
Do they expect that the quote will somehow awaken the "intellect" and "rationale" of the adversary?

Many people (such as myself) dislike organized religion since it inhibits open mindedness and freethinking. However the exact opposite of religion (militant atheism) is just as narrow minded as fundamentalism. An open mind can only be truly achieved by questioning everything, but without outright denying everything.
For example many fundamentalists are extremely homophobic. However is you read the gospels then you find that Jesus never even mentions homosexuality in passing. You'd think that if it was an instant ticket to Hell then he'd at least mention it but he does not. Jesus also rejects many of the rules found in the first 5 books of the Old testimate, stating that their purpose has effectively expired. While he doesn't mention Homosexuality specifically it can be inferred that the old laws are basically moot. Henceforth Homosexuality is no longer a sin, or at least it is a very forgivable one.
Also if you find the verse in the book of Leviticus that condemns homosexuality, roughly one page later you will find a passage that condemns wearing clothing of more then one fabric!

my general distaste for religion comes from a few areas....
first: the excuse to hate others. "hate the sin, not the sinner" is something that many strongly religious folk just don't get or only say it but don't actually live it.
second: it seems, lately, to encourage ignorance and a fear of science and progress. i think learning about our world and what affects us is very important and there seems to be a kind of movement away from technology. very fruit of forbidden knowledge gone overboard in interpretation.
third: it's the arbitrary laws that are cute for the religion but have no place for the rest of the world and only serves to hurt others and suppress society.
so uh....it's neither ignorance or ignorance like your two options listed but rather from empirical experience with what religion offers society on a whole. the bad outweighs the good at this point in societal development.
I mainly have a strong distaste for social conservatives who obstruct progress and human rights on religious grounds. Also can't stand groups who think their religion gives them special rights / entitlements over other groups (Muslims mostly fall into this camp and tend to become violent because of it).
Also, the doctrine that people who are not able to believe in a particular faith are doomed to suffer for eternity is very acerbic to me. I don’t see belief as something that is ever freely chosen.
I think these are legitimate reasons for me to dislike many religions. I don’t hate all religions though. I’m just not able to believe in them because none of them make a whole lot of sense to me.

I find it rather ridiculous that the 'religious' do exactly the same thing to the rest, and are able to get away with it because of the amount of people who are in power who either belong to their religion or sympathise with them. Proselytizers get no sympathy, because they don't give up when they are told 'no'. I would include Ragtime in this group, because he just can't take the hint that people who do not share his beliefs will never agree with him Plus, he doesn't seem to have an original opinion that doesn't paraphrase scripture. Actually, when you really come down to it, I don't really see the need for 'religion' at all, per se, because if your faith in your god is so strong, and your belief in that god has led you to a spiritual fulfillment on your own, what has belonging to whatever sect got to do with it? Spirituality and religion are not mutually joined at the hip, and nor should they be.

I will only attack religion when religion attacks something else.
I saw religious people attacking gay people, by saying they couldn't marry.
So that's why I started the "Was Jesus Gay?" thread. ![]()
Religion has nothing to do with sect. A sect is a sect and can grow out of anything. There are "spiritual" sects as well, if you want to get technical.
It is a crap argument used by "Spiritualists" and atheists who feel mightier about their beliefs.
People should either shut up or accept that others have different views. There is a difference between disagreeing with a person and insulting that person. People fail to understand this.

Funny you should mention that, I was thinking the same thing 10 minutes ago (though I never saw the thread).
