Is anyone raising an autistic teenager or adult?
My son is 23 and is still living w/ us. AS, dyspraxia, ADHD, depression, etc He is now a Sr at U of Colorado. He is supposed to graduate next spring. He seems to be getting it together especially since he has gotten passed all the General Education courses and is now taking mostly Communication courses, his major. But his social world is.... He got a part time job in the school's media center which relates to his major. He does slam poetry. The busier he gets, the fewer problems he has. Still has problems with time mgt. Militant AS and gave up Rx about six months ago. My wife is a blessing 'cause I can't handle him, no patience.
Have a fifteen year old (his birthday was today...yaaaaaaaaay!). We adopted him at two and he was so out of control we had to put locks high on the doors so he wouldn't run out at 3am and he broke his door three times with his head...lol.
Fast forward after all his school interventions plus a lot of wonderful people who were so kind to him (and helpful to us so that we could help him). He is the neatest kid on earth. He does correct me if I happen to say something that is not correct literally. If I happen to say, "We went on vacation June 3rd," he'll cut in and say, "No, that's not true. We actually went on June 2nd." Yada, yada. He doesn't argue with me much in a defiant way and is not a behavior problem. They love him at school. He truly has a wonderful heart and a sweet soul and we feel honored to have been chosen as his parents (he spent two years in foster care). We are going to start taking him to a group for Aspies to help him with his social skills. He has good social skills considering he is ASD, but he wants to be able to make friends more easily and we have a good resource out here so we're taking him. This child has been a real blessing and we love him very much. He doesn't like to be hugged much, but I am positive he knows how much we love him. When I ask him he said, in a bored voice, "Yes, I know you love me." You can just hear him adding, "Parents! They're so difficult at times!"
Yep, we are still raising my 25 year old Autistic son. He is starting to do alot better the last year or so. We have a huge boredom issue and some depression. He wants to go to Florida State. We are looking into that. I hope it works out for him. He needs a life, a job, school. Like the rest of us he just needs a reason to get out of bed every day.

Ma looks after a 27 years old male with Autistic Disorder; he looks after her too in the ways that he can. He's no problem for her, and he never has been a problem (he's a gentle, quiet and peaceful soul), other than not being the most talkative fellow around. He likes it where he is.
